Susan BEHARRIELL Obituary

LCOL (RET'D) SUSAN F. BEHARRIELL, OMM, CD February 1, 1954 - December 1, 2022 Susan passed away at Sunnybrook Hospital in Toronto, after a lengthy battle with cancer. She was predeceased by her parents, Professor S. Ross Beharriell and Patricia (Robinson) Beharriell C.M. She is survived by her brother, Rick (Della); sister, Jane (David); and niece, Elizabeth. Susan enlisted in the Canadian Armed Forces at the age of 19, before attending Queen's University, and was in the first platoon of women taking the same basic training as the men. Some of her postings as an intelligence officer included CFB Cold Lake, Air Command Headquarters in Winnipeg, the Privy Council on Parliament Hill, the Combined Intelligence Centre for NORAD/U.S. Space Command Headquarters in Colorado Springs, and the Canadian Forces College in Toronto. In retirement, Susan was a fierce advocate for all things environmental and was committed to women's rights and gender equality. She continued to travel extensively, developed a love of gardening, and delighted in watching the birds at her various feeders. Susan was perhaps happiest riding her horse. The family would like to thank the doctors and nurses at Sunnybrook, especially Dr. Eskander, for all their care and compassion. Thanks also to the staff at Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital. Cremation will be followed by interment at the National Military Cemetery in Ottawa. A Celebration of Life will take place at a later date. For those who wish, donations may be made in Susan's name to the Odette Cancer Centre at Sunnybrook.

Susan was a very close friend of my late husband Desmond Morton. She visited us several times in Montreal and Georgeville...and what amazing military conversations took place between them ! With me, we talked about birds and horses.
Des gave her his father“s sword so she could ride her horse with full ceremonial dress.
My sympathies to Jane, she was a wonderful friend and was so sweet to me after Des died. Gael Eakin

To Susan's Family,
I only met Susan virtually this past 2 years, and we conversed regularly - on the phone and through email. Loved listening to her stories...and will miss them. Soar Susan soar! You will be missed.

Remembering our friendship as teenagers and in sharing our love of horses and riding; cheers Susan! You did it your way, and made a full life! I remember when you told me you were going to join the military; i was surprised, but it was so much the right choice for you. Ride on my friend. Glad the fight is over.

Susan was a wonderful colleague at Ontario's Soldiers' Aid Commission. She always fought for those who didn't have as much as the rest of us. She was an incisive decision maker who greatly assisted in the process of extending our mandate to serve all Veterans. She will be missed.

Lieutenant Colonel (Retired) Susan Beharriell...a true mentor to me. I learned a lot from you over the years. With your guidance, I took the Remembrance Day words read over the P.A. system at our high school to a full blown assembly with marching Cadets, a guest speaker, a live trumpeter, and livestreamed for all to see. You are missed beyond words and will be remembered as my mentor forever. Thank you...

A rare quality of leadership, management and knew her job. Queen & Country before self. Always available to take my calls in Canada or overseas. Walk by her childhood house at lease two to three times a week and always thought of her kindness. R.I.P. condolences to family and friends. ETL310.

Susan was a great friend for over 40 years. We met backstage at the Ottawa Little Theatre, and found that we both had day jobs in intelligence. She sometimes stayed at our place when visiting Ottawa.
