SUSAN GILBERT Obituary

Susan Aileen Phin Gilbert died on April 4th, 2024, in Dallas, TX. Sue was born in Hamilton, Ontario, to Donald E. and Aileen Morrison Phin on May 3rd, 1937. Raised in Hamilton, she attended Branksome Hall in Toronto, and Chamberlain School of Retailing in Boston. After returning to Toronto, Sue met J. Barry Gilbert. They married on December 17, 1960. Through several moves early in their marriage, Sue was dedicated to raising their growing family while he practiced Internal Medicine, then Anesthesia. Sue had the joy of having and raising five amazing children: Diana Tipton, Katie, Julie, John Gilbert, and Stephanie Heeney and was the best mother-in-law to John Tipton, Amy Gilbert, and Tim Heeney. She was known as Susu by her grandchildren, Sarah Tipton-Smith, Joshua, and Ben Gilbert. Sue was over the moon when her great-granddaughter, Elizabeth Tipton-Smith, was born two years ago. Sue and Barry moved to Dallas in 1982, where Barry taught at University of Texas Southwestern, then moved to private practice at Baylor University Medical Center. Sue was very active in the Medical Center Women's Club, The Parkland Hospital and Health System Auxiliary, the infamous No Name Book Club, and the Dallas County Medical Society Alliance where she served a term as President. Sue and Barry spent their summers after his retirement in 1997 at their condo, outside of Victoria, BC, and boating around the Pacific Northwest with friends. Sue was a long-time member of The Church of the Holy Communion in Dallas and was on the Altar Guild and participated in the Women's weekly Bible Study for many years. They moved to Edgemere in 2017 where they were famous for always holding hands. Barry died in November 2019, just a month shy of their 59th anniversary. We know that Sue/Susu is with her Lord and Savior and is once again holding Barry's hand. The service for Sue will be on Saturday, April 20, at 3 p.m. at the Church of the Holy Communion Cathedral. A reception will follow in the Parish Hall, 17405 Muirfield Dr., Dallas, TX. Donations may be made to Austin Street Center, which Sue has been a supporter of for many years, or the Church of the Holy Communion Cathedral.

To Sue´s children: I lived two doors up from Sue, Judy Pigott , and have fond memories of Sue and Barry. A bit younger, I last saw Sue at the Frosts on Ravenscliffe in 1980. She was just terrific and so was Barry! My condolences. My dad Joe Pigott always played billiards with Don Phin!

Diana, i just saw the obituary in the paper for your Mum and I am so sorry. As a fellow Hamiltonian I have known Sue for ages, we had our daughters at the same time, Pirie and Stephanie. I remember wonderful times at our cottage and celebrating Barry´s and David´s birthday in Dallas. The three kids that you babysat for our now all married and each have two grown children of their own. My thoughts are with all your family.David and Mag Luxton
