FUNERAL HOME

Susan HAN Obituary

April is the cruellest month. Our beloved Susan passed away peacefully at Sunnybrook Hospital, surrounded by family. Her untimely death, the result of glioblastoma, has left her family, friends, colleagues and community stunned and heartbroken. Susan was an accomplished lawyer, a partner at WeirFoulds LLP, a dedicated volunteer, and a beloved host and organizer for her family. She was born in Seoul, Korea, and arrived with her family to Toronto Canada in 1967. She graduated from the University of Toronto Law School in 1986 following a degree in History and Philosophy. She began her Bay Street career at Fasken & Calvin, then held multiple in-house Counsel roles before returning to private practice. Her practice focused on corporate and commercial law, securities, and anti-money laundering and she was highly respected for her expertise. Susan's passion for community service led to being Vice-Chair of the board for the Arirang Age-Friendly Community Centre, a non-profit dedicated to providing culturally appropriate services for the Korean-Canadian community. She tirelessly led a team of volunteers to raise funds and acquire the licence for the Rose of Sharon Long-Term Care Home. She also served as Chair of the Korean Canadian Scholarship Foundation, on arts boards, and on the fundraising committee for the Philosophy Department of the UofT. Susan enthusiastically shared her time and expertise with young lawyers through the Korean Canadian Lawyers' Association. With excellent culinary skills, Susan enjoyed hosting family and friends at her home and cottage, where she always made meals bursting with flavour. She delighted in spoiling the family dog, skiing, and reading literature and history, for which she possessed lifelong intellectual interest. She often wrestled with what it meant to live a good life. Her sharp mind, generous heart, and stoic attitude meant that she often did more and eschewed recognition. Her wry humour was cherished by all who knew her. Susan is survived by her husband, Ross Price; sons, Gregory and Scott; her mother, Yong Hyun Han (predeceased by her father, Kyung Sup Han); siblings, Sally (Peter Malakhov) and Douglas (Debra Parisi); as well as many nieces, nephews, and extended family in Canada, Korea, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and the United States. She leaves a legacy of good, and hearts overflowing with sorrow. We love you Susan, rest peacefully. Visitation is planned for May 10, 2024, from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m., followed by a Celebration of Life on May 11, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. Both events will be held at Mount Pleasant Funeral Centre, 375 Mount Pleasant Road. My deepest condolences to all of Susan's family,

Susan was an absolute gem of a human being! Intelligent, kind, curious -a beautiful person with whom it was an absolute pleasure to spend time with. I know she will be so greatly missed by her family and everyone who was lucky, enough, as I was, to call her a friend.

My first ever sleepover was with Sue and Sally, and many of my childhood memories include the outings our families shared when we were kids. I remember eating mangoes in the bathtub because they were so messy,, and all the family picnics at various parks where our moms would pack a feast with bulgogi and kimchi, and our dads would have to lug it all to the nearest park hibachi.
My deepest condolences to her husband, sons, and the Han family.

On behalf of myself, the board, the members of the association, and the extended MSB community, it is with profound sadness and deep respect that we mourn the loss of Susan Han, a formidable ally, esteemed lawyer, and cherished friend, who passed away unexpectedly.

Susan's career was marked by her extraordinary intellect, sharp wit, and an indomitable spirit that dared to challenge conventional norms. Her passionate advocacy and legal expertise significantly shaped the AML landscape for MSBs in Canada through her participation on various government committees on behalf of the association with FINTRAC Canada | CANAFE Canada and Finance Canada / Finances Canada. She espoused the same to help those dedicated to supporting the underprivileged and various diaspora communities in Canada. Susan's relentless drive and dedication helped forge pathways for those often overlooked, ensuring they had a voice and representation.

We are immensely grateful for Susan's unwavering support of the association and her remarkable contributions to our community. Her legacy will undoubtedly continue to inspire and influence the work we do. We extend our deepest sympathies to her family, colleagues, and all who knew her during this difficult time. Susan's memory will forever remain a beacon of courage and hope in our hearts.

As we reflect on her impactful life, we are reminded of the strength and resilience inherent in the human spirit-qualities that Susan embodied fully.

She will be profoundly missed, but her visionary work will live on, guiding us forward.

With heartfelt condolences,
Joseph Iuso
