SUSAN MATHIESON Obituary

Susan Margaret Mathieson April 30, 1959 - April 14, 2025 Susan Mathieson (née Pychyl) was born in Welland, Ontario, to her parents, Walter and Dorothy Pychyl. They worked tirelessly to show her that her life need not have limits, giving her a happy childhood alongside her older brother, Tim Pychyl (Beth Rohr), a man for whom she had great love and respect. She was also surrounded by a myriad of friends and family, most notably her Auntie Ebby and Uncle Brian, who were like second parents to her. Her family gave her the means and courage to pursue a life outside of their small town, a place that she held dear in her heart. This led her to Queen's University, where she met the love of her life, Duncan, when they were both studying Commerce. They declared their love in marriage on October 1, 1983, surrounded by family and friends, including her father and mother-in-law, Ralph and Beverley Mathieson, both of whom she loved as her own and her siblings-in-law, Kim (Paul), Jamie (Michele), and Tanya (David). Together, Susan and Duncan vowed to build a life together. And build a life they did. After a few short years of marriage, Susan performed her biggest act of love: selflessly and wonderfully raising her family alongside Duncan. Ian (Julia Winters) was born in 1986, then Andrea in 1988, Victoria (Andrew MacIsaac) in 1991, and finally Emily (Graham Reid) in 1995. Susan coached soccer, sewed Halloween costumes, and cheered on volleyball games. She was at every school event, planned every birthday party, and celebrated every win, no matter how small. As they grew up and moved away, she answered every phone call and text, made potato salad and roast beef dinners every time the family was together, and shared her children's accomplishments with every person who cared to ask. Susan carried her entrepreneurial spirit with her before, during, and after raising her children. This included co-owning and managing a clothing boutique, earning her personal training certificate and training clients out of her house, and starting as an accountant at a travel agency, only to eventually become one of the top-selling agents. She put the same care and dedication to her work as she did to her parenting, finding great success in both. Later in life, Susan discovered her love of travel, both as a means of vacation and vocation. Whether riding bikes through Morocco, cruising down the Mekong River in Vietnam and Cambodia, or simply strolling through the neighborhood she so loved after dinner, Duncan and Susan's third act involved seeing the world, together. Weathering the storms, together. Enjoying their beautiful, well-earned life, together. This act also introduced her to four new loves: Elise, Maddie, and Duncan Finley, children of Ian and Julia, and the eagerly awaited child of Victoria and Andrew. Susan leaves this world with very few regrets-the biggest of which is not being able to meet-and spoil-any future grandchildren. But she need not worry. Susan will live on in small ways– in black jujubes and Hungarian Goulash, in good books and crossword puzzles, in tennis matches and rounds of golf. She will live on through birthday cards with monkeys on them, singing and dancing on the eve of Christmas Eve, and Duncan's jokes, which she still laughed at after over 40 years of marriage. Most of all, she will live on in the people that she so selflessly loved. Whether you've known Susan since she was a child, or only met her in the past year, you've felt her kindness. Susan was more than a good daughter, sister, wife, mother, aunt, Nanny, and friend- she epitomized what it means to be a good person. She lived a full life- full of laughter, adventures, travel, people, and, most of all, love. Her final act of love would be to implore you to do the same. A celebration of life will take place on Sunday, April 27 at the Scarboro Golf & Country Club from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m., with words of remembrance at 2:00 p.m. Susan and her family would like to thank all the healthcare workers, family, and friends who supported her throughout treatment- too many to name, but each one appreciated. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to any charity that matters to you; the family will be making donations in Susan's name to the Ajax-Pickering Hospital Foundation, the Arthritis Society Canada, and The Ronald McDonald Family Room at Markham Stouffville Hospital- all of which work to improve health outcomes in Canada.
