SUSAN SERRAN Obituary

SUSAN SERRAN It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Susan Mary Serran in her 70th year. Susan passed peacefully on December 29, 2023, with her brother, Chris, and good pal Jeff (Jennifer) by her side. Susan is survived by her brothers, Larry (Cathy), William (Laurie) and Christopher (Kristin) along with nieces and nephews Geris, Jamie (Hannah), Jade (Kris), Jessica, Ian (Angie), Trevor (Jenna), Tommy (Natasha), Sean (Kathryn), Carling (Charlotte) and Malcolm (Lauryn). She is also survived by many great-nieces and nephews. Susan was predeceased by her parents William and Dora (Aleck) Serran; her sister, Catherine and brother-in-law Frank Gould, and her dear friends Sam Conti and Marie Mandeville. Following her graduation from Brock University in 1978, Susan lived her life in Toronto's east end Beach. For many years, her work at Theatre Direct, the Bathurst Street Theatre, Theatre Passe Murielle and as Director of Community Development at Artscape contributed greatly to the Toronto Theatre and Arts scene. For the last 14 years, Susan dedicated her life to Toronto city politics. She served as Executive Assistant to Toronto City Councillor, Paula Fletcher, with whom she had a close friendship, and who was beside her until the end. Together they helped advance many extraordinary projects in Toronto Danforth. Should you wish to make a donation in Susan's honour, the Canadian Cancer Society, Michael Garron Hospital or a local women's shelter would be welcome recipients. Susan would also have appreciated you buying flowers for a friend, or simply being kind and compassionate to those around you. Enjoy theatre in a smaller venue. Visit an Art Gallery. Hear live music. Sending love, light, and prayers to Susan´s family and friends. I´m very saddened to hear about Susan´s passing. Attached is a photo of Jack, her beloved little companion, for whom I´d care when Susan travelled to Barry´s Bay. Before those trips, she´d leave detailed notes for me (Wineva neighbour) about Jack´s favourite things, one of which was CBC radio to comfort him in her absence. I can still hear her laugh and feel the warmth of her generosity and kindness. I was always gifted with extra-special cards and flowers upon her return. Susan´s soul is among us as we remember her deep love for Canadian literature, theatre, art, music, politics, and beauty-of plants, flowers, and furry pals.

I am shocked to hear about this. I hadn't been in touch with Susan since 2017 but I lived upstairs from her at our beloved house on Wineva Ave. in the beach. We were neighbours for about 25 years there! Smart, helpful, on the right side of things socially and politically. A caring contributor to the community. She will be missed.

Susan changed my life, professionally and personally (best advice I ever got was from over a meatball at The Nose) - her impact was so large.

Susie was a true friend to me. She had the best laugh and was always positive. My time spent with her in the MVDHS drama club was amazing. We had lots of fun hanging out at the Dairy Bar and travelling to contests across Ontario.
Her success in Toronto was a proud time for all of us in the Bay. And well deserved.
I never forgot this talented, kind, funny beautiful girl and I never will. God bless the SERRAN family. She will be missed.

I am just hearing this news now and deeply saddened by the loss of such an extraordinary human being and community builder. I know Susan through our Toronto theatre community and also through the many ways that Susan and Paula´s advocacy and support paved ways for arts and culture in Toronto-Danforth, including Crow´s Streetcar Crowsnest ...for which Susan was chief cheerleader. I am so sad that this beautiful soul is no longer with us but, my goodness, what a wonderful and impactful life lived. Sending condolences to Susan´s family and friends.

I am so sorry and sad to hear of Susan's passing. She was such a wonderful person and so caring and helpful with anything my partner and I contacted her about with her work with Paula. My condolences to all of her friends and family. The world was such a better place with Susan in it. She will be so missed.

I'm so sorry to hear of Susan's passing. Although we worked in the theatre biz together, she was also my beaches neighbour for many years. We gardened, talked shop and shared many laughs together. She was a warrior queen. Whenever she got behind something, she was one million percent on it. I'm sure she's involved in organizing something where she is now as she was never one to sit on the side lines. Condolences to her family, colleagues and loved ones.

Susan was totally unioque in our theatre community. her powerful sense of community linking our theatre world together with the realities of life made her a natural and beloved leader. And funny??? What a great sense of humour. she had, dishing it out as well as laughing at other' antics. Her rich laugh was unforgettable. (Maja Ardal, past AD of YPT, book-club ("Ladies Auxiliary") pal. Too soon, too soon.

She lived with passion and worked for community the same way. I knew her at Brock and continued to know in her theatre days and at PACT. Fierce and funny she gave herself to the place. Thank you Susan. Pete.

I grew up with Susan ( we always called her Susie) here in Barry's Bay. My most vivid memories are of Grade 13 at MV High School, especially in the study room on the third floor! Susie certainly brought a lot of laughter to that room! She was definitely a people person!

Susan's dedication to being equitable and just was a beacon that weaved its way through the lives of the many people her work at City Hall touched. I, like so many others, could always count on her for savvy advice delivered in a friendly and supportive manner. She will be greatly missed but she lives on through the countless ways her work enhanced our community. My heartfelt condolences to her family and friends.

So many wonderful MVDHS memories. Susie was a dear friend. Spending time at Millie's restaurant in the Bay. So many cups of coffee and laughter. Always with her writing pad in hand. Oh how we enjoyed life. She was a friend that you knew would change the world. Thanks Susie for making the teenage years so enjoyable. To her friends and family my deepest condolences.

To all the Serran family ,extended family members, and friends, I wish to extend my sincere heartfelt condolences on the loss of Susan. In school, she was also known as "Susie", a friend that always greeted you with a smile and always demonstrated true friendship and lots of laughter. When she graduated from MVDHS in Barry's Bay, she went on to further her education. We went in different directions/cities.
"Eternal rest grant unto her O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon her. May her soul rest in peace." Amen.
A childhood school chum from Barry's Bay....
