Syed AHMAD Obituary
SYED AHMAD
Syed Ahmad passed away peacefully on October 30, 2020 in Burlington, Ontario at the age of 90, surrounded by family. Born in India, Syed was the youngest son of Ahmad Ghafoor and Jameela Khatoon. He had always dreamt of travelling the world, and ultimately his career as an Economics professor took him to four continents. His last position was with McMaster University, in Hamilton, Ontario.
Syed was Head of the Economics departments in the University of Khartoum, the University of Kent and was also Chair at McMaster University. Among his many accomplishments, he was a founding member of the Arts & Science program (McMaster), authored scholarly books, including the comprehensive treatise on capital theory - "Capital in Economic Theory: Neo-Classical, Cambridge and Chaos" and published several papers in leading Economics journals.
Throughout his life, Syed took great pleasure in Urdu literature and playing Bridge. His vast collection of books reflected his insatiable thirst for knowledge, ranging from Philosophy to Economics to Politics to Arts. His passion for knowledge was wonderfully infectious, encouraging the same love of learning and critical thinking in his children and grandchildren through lively discussions. He had a warm and generous nature, letting family and friends alike know that his home was always open to them.
Syed will be deeply missed by his four daughters, Sumbul, Soraya, Shabana and Nazish, his three sons-in-law, Wasi, Shakeel and Jamil, (Pervez predeceased him), his sixteen grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Syed is buried as was his wish, next to his wife Zahida at the Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens.
Inna lillah wa inna ilayhi raajiun (to God do we belong, and to Him is our return).
