Sylvia SINGER Obituary

SYLVIA SINGER Peacefully at her home in her 89th year, Sylvia Singer, Holocaust Survivor, beloved wife of the late David Singer (z'l). Loving mother of Helen Singer and Michael Skliar, John Singer and Sara Sigal Schwartz, Sharon Singer and Ivan Karlin, Stella and Mitchell Miller and Esther and Jeffrey Green. Devoted and beloved Bubbe of Emma, Eric, Noah, Adam, Caroline, Julia, Jennifer, Joey, and Deena. Dear sister and sister-in-law of Bernard (z'l) and Irene Kott, Hilda (z'l) and Abe (z'l) Rudnick, Mina (z'l) and Sam (z'l) Daniels, and Harry and Helen (z'l) Singer. Loving aunt of many nieces and nephews. Sylvia, together with her husband Dave (z'l) and their five children made their home in Toronto on Warwick Avenue, down the street from their shul. There are many generations around the world who knew 40 Warwick was the most welcoming hotel in Canada, where everyone gathered around the table enjoying homemade Ashkenazic delicacies. This blend of Yiddishkeit and tradition, which defined Sylvia, was irresistible to everyone. Through Sylvia's love and observance of the holidays and Shabbat, she passed along these Jewish traditions and values to her children and grandchildren. Sylvia was a generous, caring and active member of her community and synagogue. She was a loyal friend with a sharp wit and a no-nonsense way about her. She took pride in her appearance and in her home. She valued education, tzedakah and empathized with those less fortunate. One of the things that defined her was her innate sense of right and wrong - you always knew where you stood with her. Her strength, determination and courage were only matched by her big heart. A family graveside service was held on Friday, March 19, 2021. Memorial donations may be made to Beit Halochem Canada, 905-695-0611, or Canadian Society For Yad Vashem, 416-785-1333.

Sylvia was a regular at my Aquafit classes at the North York YMCA. She was a natural leader and if anyone was new to class I would direct them to Sylvia knowing she would take care of them. We had many nice chats as she was waiting for her rides and I learned a little about her journey. I can't imagine having the strength of character she had. It was an honour to get to know her. My condolences to the family.
