(October 10, 1938 – January 14, 2026) Ted was born in Kirkland Lake, Ontario to parents Joseph and Gabrielle (née Durgensky) Krawchuk and grew up in nearby Larder Lake, working during his high-school summers at Kerr-Addison Gold Mines Ltd. in Virginiatown. His younger sister, Claudia, died in 2024. After graduating from St. Michael's College at the University of Toronto, he started a teaching career in Port Colborne and then for the next 30 years for the Scarborough Board of Education, teaching science at Wexford, W.A. Porter and L'Amoreaux Collegiates, while also being involved with the Science Teachers' Association of Ontario (STAO). He married Lorna Hilder, from Virginiatown, in 1968 and in 1970 they moved to Leaside a few months before daughter Carolyn was born. Daughter Margaret, known as Meg, arrived two years later. A memorable "4 over 5" year happened in 1981 when they, along with their dog, Sib, moved to the small village of Cotignac in the south of France to live in a small house that backed onto a cliff. Family camping in the summer with a tent was a way to explore Canada and enjoy nature. After Ted retired, he and Lorna went on a number of memorable land and cruise vacations. Ted enjoyed being active. One retirement objective was to learn to swim better and he spent many hours over many years at the Leaside pool in the early morning lane swims. He also walked, cycled and exercised regularly. Cultural events included many seasons of plays in Stratford, Niagara-on-the-Lake and Toronto, along with ROM and AGO memberships. Ted was an active member of St. Cuthbert's, Leaside Anglican Church. He was known as a super-salesman for whatever event was coming up, along with an appropriately gaudy hat, and for being willing to help wherever he could. He always had a smile on his face, and welcoming words. His family is grateful for the skill of the hospital staffs in Cranbrook and Kelowna and BC Paramedics who cared for him this past December, for the exemplary care he received in the Cardiac Unit at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre during early January and for the assistance of their MAID team. Ted is grateful for the years he got to be Grandad for Graham Beurskens, Annabelle Krawchuk-Miller and Ben Krawchuk-Miller and to know their fathers, Hans Beurskens and Mark Miller. He was so glad he helped raise Carolyn and Meg to be capable, independent women, and for 57+ years of sharing adventures with Lorna. A memorial service will be held at St. Cuthbert's, Leaside Anglican Church, 1399 Bayview Avenue (just south of Davisville) on Saturday, February 14th at 11 a.m. followed by a reception at the church. The service will be livestreamed via the Humphrey Funeral Home website and the St. Cuthbert's website and will be available going forward on the church website (
