TERRENCE HEATH Obituary

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Terrence George Heath, who died peacefully on January 14, 2025, at Sunnybrook Hospital. He is survived by his wife, June Clark, his three sons, Paul, Joseph and Simon, along with his several stepchildren, in-laws, and grandchildren. Terrence was born in Regina, Saskatchewan on August 25, 1936, and grew up in Regina and Saskatoon. He earned a BA from the University of Saskatchewan in 1961, an MA from the University of Oregon in 1962, followed by a DPhil in History from Exeter College, University of Oxford in 1966. After graduation, he returned to Saskatchewan, where he served as Associate Professor of History at St. Thomas More College, University of Saskatchewan until 1972, when he stepped down to pursue other goals. Terrence spent many years working as a writer, producing a literary oeuvre that eventually extended to include a book of short stories, two novels, three collections of poetry, two biographies, a film script, several exhibition catalogues, along with numerous magazine articles and reviews. He served as Executive Director of the Western Development Museum in Saskatchewan from 1977 until 1980, and as Director of the Winnipeg Art Gallery from 1983 to 1985. He subsequently worked as an independent consultant to the museum and gallery sector, producing reports that took him from Baffin Island to Vancouver Island. He also taught for many years in the Museum Studies program in the Faculty of Information at the University of Toronto. A lifelong supporter of arts and letters in Canada, Terrence was actively involved in the governance of arts organizations, including the Ontario College of Art and Design, the Writer's Union of Canada, the Public Lending Right Commission, as well as Harbourfront Centre. He was recognized with a Saskatchewan Award of Merit in 1984. His papers and works are archived at the University of Regina Library. A funeral service will be held for Terrence at Saint John's Parish, 786 Kingston Road, Toronto on Thursday, January 23 at 11am. There will be a Celebration of Life event later this year.
