Thomas BRETHOUR Obituary

Our family is sad to announce the death of Thomas Riley Brethour, who died peacefully in Ottawa, Civic Hospital, at the age of 66. Born in Toronto, Tommy was the son of Riley and Peggy Brethour, and the mischievous and much-loved brother of Andy, Cathy, Molly, Liz and Pat. He grew up in a house of talkers and would spend the rest of his life charming, arguing and joking his way through the world. A well-respected real estate broker, Tommy threw himself into work with the same enthusiasm that he approached everything he cared about. He loved art and music, and spent many happy hours at the National Arts Centre. Tommy was also a skilled cartoonist, with a sharp eye for caricature, especially of himself with the distinguished Brethour family nose. Most importantly, Tommy was a loving father and step-father to Jeremy, Dylan, and Mauri; and grandpa to Loic, Rowan and Liliwen. He was especially patient and empathetic with small children, and loved being silly with his grandkids. Tommy will be remembered as the funny, generous, thoughtful and occasionally difficult person that he was. His life, while marked by ups and downs, was full, determined, curious and uniquely his own. He raised three kids, traveled the world, collected an entire house of books, and entertained (and exasperated) his family with truly terrible jokes. In his last few years, Tommy dealt stoically with health problems caused by type 1 diabetes. Donations to the War Amps or Diabetes Canada in memory of Tommy would be appreciated. We love you dad, we'll miss you, rest easy wherever you are.

I met Tom in 1971, we were twelve years old. We spent the next four years as roommates at boarding school. Talk about getting to know someone. He made me laugh and he made me crazy. But most importantly, he taught me to grab life by the horns and enjoy the ride. We loved to talk about art, books, movies and theatre and, in recent years, we shared our writing with one another. Tom was inquisitive, creative and fearless. And he always remembered to ask about my family and what everyone was up to. Now he's gone and I will dearly miss him. But the adventures, the discussions, the hijinks will be with me forever. What a friend.

We had the opportunity to share many years working together as a team with Tom at Avison Young. We enjoyed our enthusiastic debates with Tom over the years.. usually that ended in a well-familiar 'Tom chuckle' that saw him acquiescing that the true value of something was usually 'his opinion + 30%'. Even though we knew him as a colleague, we are strongly aware of his deep care and compassion for his friends and family, always enjoyed his lively stories, and marveled at his brave strength in his challenges with his diabetes. We are sad to lose him, and so sorry for your family's loss. Gillian Burnside and Ron Milligan

I'm so sorry to hear of Tom's passing at far too young an age. I had the privilege of working with Tom for several years before he set out on a new adventure in Ottawa. I always enjoyed our talks together.
Our deepest condolences to the entire Brethour family. Rest in peace my friend.

Tom Brethour was as indivdual a character as you will ever find. His spirit and determination unmatched. His humour endless, his compassion deep , his sometimes disruptive force challenging....he raised three remarkable children with evidence of the same character...Mauri at his side over the last year as he battled the ravages of diabetes...she is an angel . Dylan from England and Jeremy from Montreal enduring compassion with their father to the end....Tom grew up in a noisy and chaotic family environment with 5 other siblings, 4 sisters and a brother...it was survival of the fittest...or the loudest....when he passed the stories of our youth overflowed....his pranks, his oft times quirky humour...reminded us that no matter what the challenges of life do it with a smile and a positive attitude. That was our Tom...rest in peace brother...you are in a better place.
