THOMAS ALBERT GASS

THOMAS ALBERT GASS obituary

THOMAS GASS Obituary

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, Tom Gass, who died peacefully at home, with loved ones by his side on January 25, 2025. Predeceased by his daughter, Heather Kramer; and his grandson, Peter Kramer; he leaves behind a legacy of love and devotion, cherished by his wife of 72 years, Joan (nee Mawhinney); his daughter, Wendy McLaughlin; and his son, Michael (Patti). Adored as "Grandpa Tom" by Kristen Kramer, Ryan McLaughlin (Sam), Ian McLaughlin (Corinne), Joanie Stoate (George), Jeffrey Gass (Kim) and Julie Crew (Jean Marc); and 11 great-grandchildren who brought him immense joy. Tom was born on March 4, 1931, in Toronto to Beryl and Tom Gass and grew up under the watchful eyes of his two half-brothers, Peter and John McCrodan. He attended St. Andrews College and later embarked on a 13-year career in the army, during which he and Joan lived in Germany, London, Ontario, Rivers, Manitoba, and Barrie, Ontario. Tom served for a year as a peacekeeper in Gaza in 1960 before retiring as a Captain in 1965. The family then moved to Toronto where he began his distinguished career with Bongard Leslie, retiring in 1996 from BMO Nesbitt Burns. Tom treasured long summers cottaging in Muskoka with his family, always taking advantage of the special days when the wind picked up and he could show off his skippering skills to a family crew of all ages and abilities, instilling in his grandchildren a love of sport. He was an avid golfer and skier and enjoyed countless hours at Muskoka Lakes Golf and Country Club and Caledon Ski Club. He and Joan enjoyed 25 winters at their much-loved home in Naples, Florida, where he continued his love of sailing, establishing the weekly club RC sailing regattas. They travelled the world on many memorable trips with family and friends. Tom will be remembered as the best dressed man in the room, a fine gentleman, a man of tradition and a proud Canadian. He had an infectious smile with brilliant dimples, a clever sense of humour, and a remarkable ability to forge friendships where ever he went. He lived a long fulfilling life surrounded by the love of his family, dear friends and neighbours. A celebration of Tom's life will be held on April 25, 2025, from 4-6 p.m. at Rosedale Golf Club.

Tom was my wonderful mentor at BMO Nesbitt Burns in 1994. He was one of the most kind, wonderful and calm people I have ever met. I am so sad to hear of his passing.

My sincere condolences to the Gass family. It was always a joy to see Tom, and Joan, at the Club in Muskoka. One grows up in the shadow of their parents friends it seems up at the Club and Tom will be missed.

At this stage, I think I can simply refer to him as Tom-the father of three great friends from our wonderful neighborhood.

He was a wonderful father, a cherished mentor, and a truly fantastic person. Tom brought warmth, kindness, and an ever-present smile to everyone around him. His great sense of humor was a gift-he had a way of making people laugh, even on the toughest days.

Tom was one of the many amazing dads who made Strathallan Blvd. such a special place to grow up. A street filled with families, friendships, and memories, made all the richer by fathers like Tom-men who gave generously of their time, wisdom, and joy.

His presence was a blessing, and his legacy lives on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.

I remember Tom with his Olympic medallions around his neck. It was a costume party and his explanation of the medallions was hilarious! I loved that guy!

We love you Grampa Tom. Thank you for being such a wonderful man to your grandchildren and great-grandchildren. I will forever cherish the rounds of golf, days spent sailing together in the sonar, and watching you meet your great-grandchildren on the dock. I think of you every time I load the dishwasher, iron a shirt, or fold a fitted sheet to perfection.
