Thomas IRWIN Obituary

THOMAS BRYAN IRWIN Beloved husband, dad, grandfather, brother, and "Uncle Bryan" to countless kids, Thomas Bryan Irwin, 79, of Toronto Ontario, passed away surrounded by family and his adoring wife Betty, on Father's Day, June 19, 2022. Appropriate timing for "Pappy" to leave, as he was indeed the greatest of dads, and loved by his community for his big and generous heart. Described as a "starter pistol of happiness", Bryan could make you laugh until it hurt. He was naturally playful, and whether it was charades, conga lines or beach volleyball, with Bryan games became all-day Olympic-level events. Born to parents Samuel and Beatrice Irwin in Toronto, he was the youngest of four children, older brothers Arnold and Mac and his favourite sister, Marilyn. After a mischievous childhood, he attended Ridley College and then graduated from the University of Western Ontario Business School. Bryan went on to obtain his law degree from Osgoode Hall in 1970. Joining the family business Irwin Toy in 1972, he became a legendary salesman and a mentor to many in the industry. In serious business meetings, he'd delight his customers by getting on the floor and pretending to be a baby to demonstrate a toy. Bryan also served as a board member for Gilda's Club of Greater Toronto and helped to raise money to support families of cancer patients. Passionate in all things, Bryan loved history, discussing geopolitics, playing tennis and golf and was the self- proclaimed "Club Champion" anywhere he played. He was also a lifelong, albeit tortured, fan of the Maple Leafs. Bryan and Betty lived a big life. Side-by-side, they hosted family and friends at their cottage every weekend on Lake of Bays, traveled the world and even survived a plane crash! The greatest joy of his life was his family. He was very proud of his two children, Jennifer (Rich McKay) and Mark and took every opportunity to boast about their accomplishments. His grandchildren Will, Matt, Erika and Mina were the light of his and Betty's life and he soaked up every second he had with them. When Bryan was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer last year, he never once showed a second of self pity or anger, and instead considered himself fortunate that he had time to tell his family and friends how much they meant to him. As he fought hard to prolong his life, he greeted every morning by saying, " I am the luckiest man alive!" Bryan was humbled by the support that he received from his family and his vast circle of friends, who called, emailed and flocked to his and Betty's side to help, listen, and laugh together. Bryan's family is indebted to Pancreatic Cancer Canada for unwavering help in navigating this past year and they thank specifically, Michelle Capobianco and Dr. Daniel Reneuf. Donations in lieu of flowers to Pancreatic Cancer Canada, pancreaticancercanada.ca or in the US, www.pancone.org would help to find a cure for this devastating disease. This wonderful, magical man started his last conga line last Sunday and he wants us to continue dancing and laughing to the music of Boney M. Bryan gave us the template and tools for a wonderful life, and we thank him and love him "like a rock." If his story touches you, please honour him by doing something out of your comfort zone; dance, sing loudly without the lyrics, give someone a hug, speak to someone who is shy, or just do something silly. There will be a celebration of life this fall in Toronto. Memories can be left at [email protected] and would be greatly appreciated.

Bryan was a fiercely loyal, protector and defender of his customers. He was also willing to go the extra mile for Irwin Toy. There were no limits and he performed like a Maestro. Outside the toy world, Bryan was full of life and laughter. He also was super competitive and could turn any situation into some sort of game. I remember visiting the grandparents in the 60's in our Sunday best dress and there was Bryan, football in hand, ready to play touch football which quickly degraded to more like tackle. Trusty Dana, his German Sheppard, played flanker.
In the oy hockey tournaments, look out! Bryan does not lose. The buyers were free game in the corners-just make sure they can still write the orders. I think there was a little Bobby Clarke in him. All in all, these competitive games were in great spirit and Bryan made sure everyone had a good time.
Bryan had a charming, playful personality; a great wit and his self-deprecating humour seem to make his fierce determination to play big in life and boy he did. We will miss him. God Bless you Uncle Bryan.

Bryan you were the glue that made Irwin Toy the special place it was. From hearing the famous bellow coming from his office GENA !!! Or the rousing pregame speech that would make Punch Imlach proud before the Toy Cup hockey championship which Irwin Toy won with Bryans leadership . After a meeting with Bryan Don Cherry said to me wow Bryan is a lot like me. He is a leader . Coach you will be missed R.I.P.

I keep thinking that each time I will have these great words of comfort. Words that will make sense of why we lost a very kind, generous and hilarious man so soon. And as it turns out I have no words that can express my feelings of sadness for your loss.
You are Bryan were always so kind and welcoming to me. I thank you so much for that.

Bryan was a genuine, stand alone character; bigger than life! The first time we met Bryan he was on the dance floor, " getting down" with his dance partner(s) and all the people around him. Music was truly in his soul!
Later on, when he and Betty lived beside us, for a short time, we remember his generosity, his kindness, and his ability to listen to get to know new friends.
He was truly in love with Betty and his doggie, Sammy and didn´t mind saying so! A wonderful husband and father.
A fond memory of Rob and I was a cold but sunny winter´s day, drinking Bloody Mary´s outside, on the side deck, wrapped in Scottish Wool blankets, watching Sammy and our two labs playing in the snow; Bryan laughing at/ with their antics.
Another is when Betty , Bryan and Mark and his lovely two daughters came over to help us trim the Christmas tree, all with matching Christmas Pj´s on! Priceless!
We will miss him but Bryan will live in our hearts and memories forever.
Betty and family......peace be with you.
Love,

We have no words to describe Bryan, I can only think off Bryan ...
"You are the Greatest"...

We have known Bryan more than 50 years. Cees met him as a lawyer, all they did, laughed, laughed and laughed, immediately they were buddies!!

We spent many holidays with Bryan and Betty and we got to know him as very funny, special, joyful, very devoted to his beautiful Betty and his wonderful family.

I don´t know anybody who have had more fun in his life, travelled all over the world, devoted to the family, very helpful in difficult situations, and being an amazing man!!

Bryan taught me and Cees to play tennis, we have never had so much fun, he was determined we would hit the ball in the sweet spot of the racket, and when it happened, he yelled, you did it, hiep, hiep, hoera!!!

Bryan you are so special and amazing, we are so grateful that we met you and Betty, and that we were part of your lives, thanks a million...
"Love ya like a rock"

Dave and I are very sad to hear the news about your Dad. The joy he brought into a room was a gift. I´ve always thought that our Dads were similar in the way they enjoyed their time with family and friends. Big bold personalities and loved life! Your Dad was so good at making people feel included and he put a smile on everyone´s face ...whoever and wherever they were in the room. Dave and I remember watching him relate to your kids when we visited in Palm Desert... a kid at heart but wow what memories they´ll have of such a super fun and wise grandparent. I know you´ll miss him every day but how very blessed you are to have had such a wonderful bond with your Dad. It was such a lovely posting you put on Facebook and being one of those not on social media we really appreciated you sending it out. I would not have wanted to miss your lovely note, which while reading I could not stop tearing up. Tears of sadness for all who will dearly miss him mixed with gratefulness for knowing him. We only wish we spent more time with your Dad. We hope we can give you a real hug soon. We´re sending you our love and heartfelt condolences. xo

m so sorry to hear about Bryan's passing. Heaven won the Lottery this past Fathers Day. Although I met both Bryan and Betty here in Vernon while they still lived in Ontario, it was when they finally moved here that I got to know them much better. I can't outshine what others have said as it is so obvious how this wonderful man enjoyed life and whomever was in his presence was lucky enough to take that vibe with them. Everything was Awesome, nothing was Bad! You will be missed Bryan Irwin but OMG.....never forgotten. My heartfelt condolences to Betty, Bryan's kids and his loving grandkids xoxo

Sorry to hear of Bryan passing. We have fond memories at the cottage. Olympic weekend where I made the medals for Bryan to present, water balloon fights between docks. Playing tennis at our place. A man full of life and enthusiasm. I remember his laugh the most. Thinking of you Jenny, Mark and Betty. Love Shannon & Bryan

Bryan's passing has indeed left a large void in our lives.
Through 50 wacky and wonderful years, we so enjoyed his presence and marvelled at his exuberant lust for life ("I'm alive -- I'm alive"). Such memorable moments!
His energy and ebullience bolstered our own journeys through the long years.
May God Bless Bryan and his Family.

Bryan was an unfailing and endless source of joy to our entire family. We are so sad for all of those who didn´t have a Pappa/Uncle Bryan in their life. Charlie Chaplin wrote the song "Smile" (...though your heart is aching). We have no doubt that Charlie and Bryan are singing that tune for us now; and then laughing their butts off as Bryan butchers the lyrics. Love ya like a rock.

When I first met you Jen, we were in our mid 20's working at Second City. A bunch of were going out for drinks and I asked if you wanted to come along. You said no. You'd rather go home and hang out with your Dad, Betty and Carling the Wonder Dog. I thought how can hanging out with your Dad be more fun on a Saturday night than hanging out with a bunch of comedians?

And then I met Bryan. Boy was I wrong. He was the party! He lit up the room. Funny, charming, sometimes outrageous but always with the most infectious sense of fun. Your Dad and Betty embraced everyone with so much love and warmth that you immediately felt like part of the family.

I remember once at the cottage Bryan started an epic conga line. We danced around the cottage and then he peeled off and danced into his bedroom. The first and best french goodbye I've ever seen. It was only 9:30pm!!!

Now that I'm a wee bit older and wiser. I can see that Bryan had three things key to happiness: a zest for life, a sensible bedtime and Betty. The delight they took in each other is #relationship goals.

He was so proud of you, Mark and Betty. Inspirational in the way he embraced life and was so generously loving. He is already deeply missed. I'm going to throw on some Boney M and conga line around the living room in his honor!

With deep love and sympathies,
Jenn

I´m very fortunate to have known Bryan and you. I have great memories of our many dinners together in New York, Hong Kong & Toronto. Of staying at your house with you all...and Frisbee Bob too. And of sales meetings which always started off with a Bryan Irwin trademark comedy show that wouldn´t end until the buyers insisted we had to get down to business. His style worked too. With you two as our lead reps Teetot grew. Thank you!

I always watched you two and how you were together. I thought "if I could ever meet somebody like Betty, I´d be the luckiest I could possibly be". When I met Brandi I thought, "wow, she´s like Betty!"Smart, friendly, interesting, and a very rare level of super good people. Basically a treasure. I thought, I better not screw this up. I still think that! So far so good!!! Smiles!

I think one thing you two showed me was what a great partnership could actually be. I´m deeply grateful to you & Bryan for that.

I´m sorry to lean he´s passed on to his next comedy venue. I hope they have waitresses there who can groan at his jokes. I suspect his beautiful and hilarious way will serve him well there too.

I shared the news with Cathy, John and my Mom. All of them had great memories and love for Bryan too. They send love.

Let´s stay in touch and get together still when we´re in the same locals. We´ll be in California and Michigan a lot. Traveling some other places too when we can.

I´m sending Bryan a truckload of love and delivering a bunch to you and the rest of the family too.

With deepest appreciation for being fortunate enough to be part of your lives. Much love, Jeff

Sue and l feel privileged to have been good friends with the life force that was Bryan Irwin.
The wonderful times we had with Betty and Bryan and the Van Grolls is deeply etched in our memories forever.
Bryan's self deprecating humor was always on display with his butchering of the English language and joke punch lines.
It was fun to have him regurgitate the jokes l had previously told him,but with different punch lines.
We always knew that his style of humor masked an extremely intelligent mind.
We look forward to celebrating his life with the fabulous Betty, Jen,Mark and the family and friends in Toronto.
God bless and God rest his soul.

Oh yes I remember Bryan from my Crescent School days (Dentonia Park) where we shared a taxi to and from school as it was done in those days .We crossed paths many years later at UWO .Knicknamed the Bopper . He was among the first people to get a Ford Mustang ... Convertible I think?
Certainly one of a kind

I have such wonderful memories of your dad from my early years in Bayview Village. I remember the birthday party where he tools us all to Irwin toys and we played with all the toys...especially the giant Othello game. Sending the gentlest of hugs to Jennifer and all of his wonderful family.
