THOMAS LAWSON Obituary

April 6, 1928 - December 23, 2024. Tom was a man of integrity, generosity and passion, whose hallmark enthusiasm typified every challenge he took on. Over a long and remarkable career, "the bomb" profoundly influenced generations of students as a feisty teacher, sports coach, debating coach, housemaster, and mentor. A midlife shift toward Gandhian philosophy, environmental advocacy and social inclusivity shaped Tom's later years. His commitment to sustainable practices, community service, and intellectual openness inspired all around him. Tom's enthusiasm for life was matched only by his (surprising) grace and unwavering gratitude in his final years. Predeceased by his beloved wife, Patricia (Ketchum); Tom leaves his four children, Molly, Pippa (Lawrence), Philip (Elise), and Graeme; and granddaughters, Alexandra and Shannan. A memorial service will be held at the Trinity College School chapel on May 24th at 11 a.m., reception to follow. Donations to the Canadian Student Debating Federation, Fair Vote Canada, David Suzuki Foundation or TCS Tom Lawson Bursary.

I will never forget how I met Tom. It was a Saturday night during Michaelmas term of my first year at TCS. All the other students had gone to the cinema but I had stayed behind to study. Tom was Master On Duty in Brent that night and when he saw me in the hall he shouted out "You are Malvolio." He was directing a play that term based on the subplot of Shakespeare´s play Twelfth Night and he wanted me to be the main character. He didn´t offer me a choice. That was the beginning of a relationship which endured from that day to the end of his life. He was an inspiration to always think positively, savor every moment and act with enthusiasm.

Among other things, Mr. Lawson taught me how to think on my feet. And always question the accepted "wisdom." I was terrified before my first debate. I didn´t eat all day. But with his guidance and confidence I made it through successfully. And I´ve never been frightened to speak in public since. As an actor, that has been a gift that keeps on giving! RIP, Mr. Lawson. Even at my age I have to call you that. Not Tom. You will always be, "Mr. Lawson."

The best teachers I ever had, Tom woke up my love of literature, philosophy and critical thinking. He inspired me to become a teacher and was a lifelong mentor. The world needs more people like Tom Lawson, especially in these troubling times.
