THOMAS MERIFIELD Obituary

June 13, 1953 - August 25, 2024

Passed away peacefully in Cambridge, Ontario at the age of 71. Son of the late Russell R. and Helen (Kydd) Merifield, Tom is survived by his wife Linda (Wilkinson); his sister, Elizabeth (Galindo), as well as many cousins, nephews and nieces. His older brother, Russell G. Merifield, sadly passed away in 2017.

Tom was born in Montreal, and moved to Toronto in his teens when his family relocated. Following completion of his degree at York University, he worked at the Toronto Stock Exchange. He then pursued what became his life long career as an investment advisor at RBC Dominion Securities. He was a talented athlete who enjoyed and excelled at many recreational activities, including skiing, tennis and, his favourite, golf. He belonged to several golf clubs over the years, including The Hermitage Club in Magog, Quebec, The Donalda Club in Toronto and The Georgian Bay Club in Collingwood. His true passion was the guitar. He was a gifted guitarist who enjoyed playing with many bands and other musicians. He will be sorely missed by his family, friends and colleagues.

In order to honour his request, there will not be a funeral service. Donations in his memory may be made to any Humane Society, The Lisaard House (a hospice in Cambridge), the Canadian Cancer Society or the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada. The family would like to express their gratitude and thanks to the caring staff and volunteers at Lisaard House.

Tom and I were IA's in the same office RBP-25 RBCDS in Toronto. Tom was a calm and steady presence . You could always rely upon him for sane , sensible advice. It is a great loss to all who knew and loved him. My heartfelt condolences go out to Linda and his extended family and many friends.

Tommy my second cousin, and I were barely 13 in 1965 when he taught me the guitar riff to 'Secret Agent Man' which I loved and pursued the instrument. It led me to study at Berkee College of Music. He took me to my first kissing party where he offered my choice of any girl, so I promptly picked a charming one. Tommy said, "Except my girlfriend". I will never forget any of it and I became perhaps his first tutor, and a good guitarist and career as a guitar teacher as a direct result. May he soul soar to great heights!

I worked with Tom for many years at RBCDS. He was one of the good ones. A dry wit and a sly smile. RIP Tom.

Tom was a long time trusted financial advisor to our family. We had complete faith in Tom´s assistance with our financials as he listened carefully to our values and respected our choices. But we will always be very grateful to him for facilitating a major donation to the Winnipeg Humane Society´s capital campaign 15 years ago. We´ll really miss Tom!
