Thomas SCHNEIDER Obituary

THOMAS ERVIN SCHNEIDER MBA, PHD, CMA, CPA 1964-2023 It is with profound sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Thomas Ervin Schneider on Saturday June 3, 2023. Tom leaves behind the love of his life, Susan Smith, and cherished daughter Ella. He will be lovingly remembered by his parents, Jane Schneider and the late Frederick Schneider and as a beloved son-in-law to Patricia and William Smith. He is mourned by siblings, Peter Patel-Schneider (Sandhya), Dan Schneider (Rhona), Anne Fontana (Fabrizio), Peggy Schneider (Gareth), his nieces and nephews, Ella's partner Nia Yungblut, as well as countless dear friends and colleagues. Tom lived life to the fullest and had many passions. He loved hiking, mountain biking, downhill skiing, paddling and music. He took any opportunity to strap on his cross-country skiis and knew how to stretch the season long after others had stored their gear. Tom had a very special relationship with his farm. The trails will feel empty without him. He loved nature, travel, and good food. Dropping in to visit Tom and Sue was like an oasis of good cheer, surrounded by birds, forests and friends. Music was always a part of Tom's life, and his voice could light up a room. Tom's academic journey was impressive and spanned music (opera), business (MBA Wilfrid Laurier), and accounting (PhD University of Waterloo, CPA, CMA). He was a faculty member at the University of Alberta before joining Toronto Metropolitan University as an Associate Professor of Environmental and Social Accounting. Tom's passion for environmental protection and ethics informed his many academic contributions and collaborations, including membership on the United Nations Expert Group on Resource Management. Tommy was the boy who always smiled. His magnetic personality gathered lifelong friends everywhere he went. Friends loved spending time with him and he made everyone feel included. We will miss his warm and easy smile, his natural laughter and the twinkle in his eye. A visitation will be held at the Erb & Good Family Funeral Home, 171 King St. S., Waterloo on Wednesday, June 14, 2023, from 4:00-7:00 p.m. A private memorial service will follow at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in Tom's honour can be made to Bruce Trail Conservancy, Camp Waabanaki care of YMCA of Three Rivers Waterloo Region, or Birds Canada which may be arranged through the Erb & Good Family Funeral Home, 171 King Street S. Waterloo at www.erbgood.com

I was away in Italy at the time of Tom's funeral, and returned on June 26th (a place of interesting and memorable stories from Tom around the start of COVID). The, way too early, passing of Tom is very sad for all that knew him. Tom and I worked together on several research projects and he was a great colleague. He will be missed by many in the academic community. I will especially miss getting together with Tom for lunches in Waterloo (or at TMU); these lunches were always enjoyable. My sincere condolences to his family and loved ones.

I was incredibly fortunate to get to know Tom as part of the UNECE EGRM activities. Tom had such balanced views on everything. I particularly enjoyed our side discussions on the ups and downs of academic life, and how to reconcile those with what really matters at the end of the day. What a shock to learn he is no longer with us, but we shall always carry his memory.

Words can't describe how shocked and saddened I am by this news. Tom had a tremendous impact on my life, and he is the reason why I am pursuing my PhD. I first met Tom when I was an undergraduate student at Ryerson, and we continued working ever since.
Tom was truly a fantastic mentor, and I will miss him deeply.
I send my condolences to his family.

It was with a profound sense of shock and sorrow that I found that Tom had passed away.

I first met Tom when he was at the U of A and, crossing the boundaries between scientific and accounting professions, we developed a long term professional collaboration that became a treasured personal friendship.

I recruited him as to the United Nations Expert Group on Resource Management (EGRM) where he was a valued member. In recent years, we met at the EGRM meetings in Geneva and, after the official proceedings, enjoyed sampling the Geneva restaurants in the evenings.

I have passed the information on Tom's passing to our colleagues at the EGRM.

The last EGRM meeting in Geneva was only a few weeks ago and, as I was unable to attend, Tom presented a paper that I had written, on my behalf, and I was looking forward to continued collaboration.

I have lost a good friend and present my deepest condolences to Susan and Ella,

I have had the privilege of knowing Tom since 2012, and we have worked together as colleagues since 2018. Throughout our time together, Tom has been more than a dedicated colleague; he has been a mentor, friend, and a source of inspiration to many. His contributions to our academic community will be deeply missed.

As we mourn his loss, I extend my heartfelt condolences to Tom's family and loved ones. May they find comfort and strength during this difficult time. May Tom rest in peace, forever remembered for the impact he has made on our lives and the legacy he leaves behind.

Tommy was an original soul. He was in a happy place on his cross country skis. I've had so much fun skiing and biking with Tommy over the years. My fondest memory of skiing with Tommy was during an early morning ski just two years ago. Westley (family dog), Tommy and I were at the top the "S Turn downhill at the farm, and the snow was plentiful and perfect. Over to our left is a second option we can take to descend and it's the toughest downhill out there. Death Gully" is the name we gave it. We went over and looked at it, and decided the time was right to test our courage. Tommy went first and just hit it. I had a perfect view. There are three very challenging turns with dips, and up and downs on banks (like a bobsled run). Tommy made it all the way down with speed and no hesitation, and finished the last turn with a text book telemark turn at high speed. I was in awe. He had many talents, and kindness flowed from him. I'm going to miss my friend, lots, be well Tommy! à la prochaine mon pote!!

I only knew Tom a little -- as one of the slightly older group at GRCI (he was two years my senior), and a castmate in the annual drama performances. I remember him as "one of the good ones" -- inclusive, encouraging, supportive...a great example of a human being...sounds like that's the way he continued to live the rest of his life. That I am taking the time to write about someone I haven't seen or known for nearly 40 years should be a testament to the person he was. I hope his family members take some comfort in this.
