Timothy KNIGHT Obituary

TIMOTHY CHADBORN KNIGHT January 25, 1938 - September 6, 2023 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Timothy Chadborn Knight in Cape Town, South Africa. Tim was predeceased by his mother, Pegs; father, Astley; sister, Penny; and brother, Howard. He will be missed by his sister, Jane; children, Lesley (Richard) and Derek; as well as his nieces, Deborah and Bridget. Born in Amersham, UK, and raised in South Africa, Tim found his calling as a journalist at 17, leaving school to become a reporter. His love of storytelling and a deep need for truth led him and his young family to live in several southern African countries, and eventually to New York, Montreal and finally, Toronto, where he lived most of his life. Tim's career included working for some of the most prominent broadcast networks in North America, where he won an Emmy and other awards for his documentaries. He also took pride in being fired by some of those same networks for stubbornly sticking to his journalistic principles! In Canada, Tim produced CBC's 'The National,' later becoming executive producer for CBC's TV journalism training, where he had a profound impact on TV news across the country. At the end of Apartheid, Tim was honoured to train journalists in South Africa. In 2013, he returned for good, writing: 'Right outside my window, nine floors down, the almighty Atlantic rolls onto the beach all the way from the Antarctic.' An outstanding writer, Tim produced powerful stories about southern Africa after his return. The family thanks the staff of St. James Retirement Hotel and False Bay Hospital for his care.

Oh dear Timothy. I miss you dear and trusted friend. I meant to visit you in South Africa so often and with my work becoming increasingly focused in Africa, felt the need to reach out to you. You are in my heart always and your guidance has made such wonderful impact on so many lives. You were a beacon in my life. Thank you for your eternal bright light my dear friend.

I learned so much about television story-telling from Tim Knight, who was far and away the finest instructor CBC ever had in my 25 years there. He taught the importance of focus, of conversational writing, of avoiding cliche, of working harder to write better scripts, and most of all - of serving the audience. I admired him hugely. Sorry to hear he has passed. Tim was a man who taught so much to so many.

Knight was a treasure. A stickler for well written well thought out prose - telling a story not just stringing facts. I learned so much from him and am very sad to hear he is gone, I can hear him still in my ear, saying Ormiston, work harder on that script - what are you trying to say? Thinking of him and to his family: Tim left an indelible mark.
