TOM HUGHES Obituary

In Loving Memory of Tom Hughes Sr. (December 13, 1935 - February 28, 2025) It is with great sadness that we share the passing of Tom Hughes Sr., the founder of EarthFresh (formerly known as Mackay and Hughes). Tom's lifelong passion for the produce industry began in 1963 when he and his business partner, Dave MacKay, established a potato brokerage office at the Ontario Food Terminal. They distributed potatoes shipped primarily by rail from Prince Edward Island, laying the foundation for what would become a thriving business. Before long, Mackay and Hughes expanded into its own warehouse in Etobicoke, Ontario. With a dedicated rail siding, a fleet of company vehicles, and its own repacking line, the business quickly gained success by providing extra services that set them apart. By the mid-1980s, when Tom retired, Mackay and Hughes had become one of Canada's largest potato distributors, a testament to Tom's vision, hard work, and dedication. Beyond his professional achievements, Tom was a devoted family man. He cherished his wife, Catherine; his three sons, Tom (Susie), Jeff (Mafie) and Greg (Amanda); his two daughters, Mary (Peter) and Sheila; 11 grandchildren, Whitney, Billy-Jean, Jessica (Jordan), Tommy, Hayden, Lydia, Julia, James, Jasper, Willow and Barrett; and his three great-grandchildren, Jack, Declan and Madelyn. His love for family was evident in everything he did, and his warmth extended to those around him. Even after his retirement in 1986, Tom remained passionate about the produce industry. He was well known and deeply respected by colleagues, customers, and friends. His presence at EarthFresh and Gambles was always a welcome one - whether you had been with the company for years or had just joined, Tom made sure to greet you with kindness, genuine interest and a warm handshake. Tom Hughes Sr. leaves behind an incredible legacy, not just in business, but in the countless lives he touched. His dedication, generosity, and unwavering spirit will always be remembered. Rest in peace, Tom. You will be missed but never forgotten. Visitation at Smith's Funeral Home, 1167 Guelph Line (one stop light north of QEW), Burlington (905-632-3333), on Wednesday, March 5th, from 3-5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m., and Thursday, March 6th, from 3-5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Celebration of Life to follow at a date and time to be announced. If desired, memorial contributions to Georgian Bay Forever or Joseph Brant Hospital Foundation would be sincerely appreciated by the family. www.smithsfh.com
