TWYLA GIBSON Obituary

Passed away at The University of Iowa Health Care Hospital (Iowa City, Iowa, USA) on October 18, 2024, from metastatic breast cancer. She was born in Calgary, Alberta, Canada on June 30, 1954. Soon after her birth, she was adopted by Edyth (Crabb) Gibson and Frank Gibson. She attended Calgary High School and at the age of 18 moved to Toronto. Her first jobs included arranging flowers at a local grocery and teaching weaving classes. Her academic career began at the age of 27, and over the next 7 years, she completed an undergraduate degree in religious studies at the University of Toronto. During this time, she also worked as a medical underwriter and for Alumni Relations at the University of Toronto. She continued her education at the University of Toronto and earned a Master of Arts degree in 1993 and a Doctor of Philosophy in 2000. Her doctoral dissertation focused on Plato's Code and was recognized as outstanding by the College of Education. She joined the faculties at Guelph University and later at the University of Toronto teaching philosophy and education. She was a Senior Fellow in the McLuhan Program in Culture and Technology (2005-2006) and a Visiting Fellow at Harvard University (2010 – 2012). In 2012 she joined the faculty of Library Science in the School of Information Science at University of Missouri-Columbia, USA. Her work explored ancient Greek texts and the source texts of religions to document how changes in media (from oral traditions to modern literacy) transform meaning. She retired in 2020 and moved to Iowa City, Iowa. She was preceded in death by her mother and father and younger brother, Keith Gibson. She is survived by her life partner, Mark Volkmann and a host of lifelong friends. While we miss her perspicacity, tenacious brilliance, and infectious laughter, we remain inspired by her generosity of spirit, capacity for forgiveness and tremendous grit living with a long and difficult illness. A memorial is planned for May 31, 2025, at the Oeno Art Gallery, Bloomfield, Ontario, Canada. Interested parties should contact Mark Volkmann for details ([email protected]).

I shared an apartment with my artist friend Mel McLean.Mel went to Calgary on a summer trip and there met Twyla and Monty who I believe were about to travel to Toronto. He offered them his room to stay in during their visit.I was not informed and they showed up one day,to my surprise, with their Afghan dog Tabac and their blue Volksvagon Beetle .We immediately hit it off and they stayed for about two weeks till they found a home in southern Toronto near High Park.I found them to be amiable, particularly Twyla who loved to socialize with people in a soft and comforting way. There was something giving off cheerful vibes, something subtly electric, to any discussion she was part of. The way she spoke about this or that. She did mention once that she had been adopted and that about the time that she moved to Toronto her natural mother had about the same time moved to Calgary.I found that so unfortunate, but reasoned that somehow they had psychically connected and were looking to unite after all these years. I'm glad she did so well in academia.I'm inclined to think that we shall meet her in the future in a reincarnated state, but may not recognize each other.

I'm not sure why I had the urge to look up Twyla after all these years but I'm saddened to find out about her passing. My memories of Twyla still bring me joy, even after these decades. I remember her as intelligent and brilliantly funny. You must miss her very much. My deepest condolences.

Such very sad news. Twyla and I spent many hours together working on a book. We may not have always agreed and I will always hold a special place in my heart for Twyla and our time together.

My first memory of Twyla is when my dog ran into a circle of bushes in High Park and I could hear someone talking to him. I crawled into the circle to see this lovely young woman reading a book with bees flying all around her. We became instant friends and I had dinner with her and Monty that night. They were making a table top using different dried beans and anyone who visited added to it. Love her always and forever.

Condolences Mark. She was a beautiful person inside and out. I met her almost on her arrival in Toronto in 1974 and have been enthralled by her since - her kindness, her wonderful flowing mind and her warmth. I often stop during the day now and think I wish I could call her now. My love to you Mark.
