Very sad to hear of Val’s passing. Unfortunately, the visit with her I had planned for September 24 on my tour of Eastern Ontario and Quebec will not be happening. Our last email was in mid-June, when we had our regular “catching up” chats and sharing of photos, this one of beautiful flowers. Val saw the beauty around her, and inspired others to see it too, and to pass it along. I met Val in 2007 when I wrote a column for the Ottawa Citizen on My Horse, My Passion, the fundraising book she published in memory of her daughter, Kenra, who, as a young teen, had created the “scribbler” on how to take care of a horse. Something clicked between the two of us, and we have been friends ever since. I have had the pleasure of enjoying Val’s company on many occasions since I moved away from Ottawa, and especially treasure the memories of when Val, despite some trepidation, flew to Windsor to visit with my husband Gary and I at our waterfront home in Leamington. We live in Windsor now, where I have looked forward to waking up and finding an email from my friend, telling me about her golf or bridge game, a reunion with a camper from her Quebec days, or inviting me to one of her famous birthday parties, including a very special one at the “farm.” I am relieved to hear that Val passed peacefully in her sleep, as that is what she would have wanted. She had no time for frailty or sickness. In my mind, I will always remember Val as a whirlwind of activity, never walking, always running, and enjoying life to the fullest. Goodbye my friend. I hope you’re having a great golf game in heaven, your “horsey” scarf blowing in the wind.

Oh the Lord was good to me and so I thank the Lord, for giving me the things I need, the sun and rain and the apple seeds. The Lord is good to me. Val, Mrs. Willis thanks for the great childhood memories.

I was a camper at Wilvaken in the early 1960s, and have wonderful memories of Val (“Mrs. Willis” to us!) from that time. I was interested to read about Val’s many accomplishments, and am glad that she had such a full and rewarding life. As the camp director, she will have influenced so many children, especially in her enthusiasm for bringing people of different backgrounds together. I still remember the camp song, which reflected this: “Just like a beautiful rainbow, smiling at skies that are grey come our girls and our boys, sharing food, sharing joys, with the children of lands far away I see in that beautiful rainbow, the flags of all nations unfurledin that rainbow around the world.” Thank you, Mrs. Willis.
