VERONICA HALMOS 1929 - 2017

Dr. Veronica Halmos, M.D. F.R. C.P. C., passed away peacefully at Sunnybrook Hospital, in her 88th year, on December 27, 2017. Beloved wife of George Halmos and loving mother of Marion Halmos and Tony Halmos, Vera (as she was known to friends) will be fondly remembered by her family, friends, patients and colleagues.
Born in Budapest, Hungary, and raised in the coal-mining town of Tatabánya, Veronica emerged from the war years to realize her dream of becoming a physician, graduating in medicine from the University of Budapest in 1953.
In 1957, she and her husband George, refugees from Hungary's communist regime, settled in Toronto and made the most of the opportunities available to them. She interned at Women's College Hospital, earning her license to practice medicine in Ontario, did a residency at St. Joseph's Health Centre, and achieved her Fellowship in Internal Medicine as a Fellow at Sunnybrook Hospital, finally beginning her private practice and coming on as full-time staff at St. Joseph's Health Centre in 1961.
Veronica became the first female physician at St. Joseph's Health Centre, where she pioneered the multidisciplinary team approach to care. She remained at St. Joseph's until 1994, after which she spent a decade practicing at several clinics in Toronto and volunteering at North York General Hospital.
Veronica was an avid reader and debater, with a love of travel. She took great enjoyment in hosting and attending social gatherings with a wide circle of dear friends that encompassed several generations.
The funeral will be a private family affair. A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, January 20th from 3 p.m. - 5 p.m., at the Mt. Pleasant Funeral Centre, 375 Mt. Pleasant Rd. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to Sunnybrook Hospital at donations.sunnybrook.ca
