Vilma SCOTT Obituary
VILMA McCALLUM SCOTT Vilma Eileen McCallum Scott took her last breath peacefully at home with family on April 5, 2022, a few months before her 92nd birthday. Vilma was born near Gaspe, Quebec on August 2, 1930 to Stanley and Ina (née Miller) McCallum. She lived and her children were born in four different Canadian provinces. For most of her life, Vilma lived in Don Mills, Ontario. She was active in her neighbourhood, her community and in the lives of her children. She was a stable presence at home while her husband, Fenton Scott, was often away pursuing his career in the mining industry. Their marriage was strong, stretching over 60 years until Fenton's death in 2011. She was very involved in the Women's Mining Association of Canada. Vilma raised three daughters and a son, as well as many cats and dogs and the occasional turtle or fish. After the death of her father, she began to follow the stock market and her financial acumen allowed her new freedom and opportunities. She bought herself an orange convertible sports car, as well as beachfront property in her beloved Gaspe, to which she drove for many summers. She was passionate about her garden and the wildlife that visited daily from nearby parks. She read the papers diligently, to stay apprised of finances, world affairs and politics. In recent years Vilma became a devoted Toronto Raptors fan. Vilma was a kind and generous person. She was independent, strong willed and opinionated. She had an uncanny ability to elicit the life history of strangers shortly after meeting them. She was a feminist, raising her daughters to believe that they could and should do whatever they wanted. Once her children were in high school she took university courses and went back to work. Her family and friends will especially miss her stories. She remembered her life in amazing detail. Vilma will be sorely missed by her family: her brother, Alton; daughters, Dawn (Michael Harris), Sharon (Jabu Bell), and Jill (Peter Walker); son, Graeme; grandchildren, Jeffrey, Kate, John, Chris, Evie, Dani, Becky, Stanley and Mitchell; and her great-grandchildren, Roman and Orion. Her cat Rosie is bereft. She was predeceased by her husband Fenton Scott and her son-in-law Peter Walker. Her family sends much gratitude to all of her healthcare professionals, in particular Dr. Sandi Shamon and Sami Barat of the Temmy Latner Center for Palliative Care, who provided wonderful care to Vilma in the last two challenging years of her life. If desired, donations in her honour can be made to The Nature Conservancy of Canada or the animal charity of your choice. A celebration of her life will be announced at a later date.
