VIVIENNE MONTY Obituary

(March 20, 1948 - November 11, 2025) Vivienne was born in Budapest, the only child of Arthur and Lilian Monty. In 1956, the family moved to Toronto, a place Vivienne was happy to call home for the rest of her life. After completing her BA and Master of Library Science, she spent 40 highly productive years at York University, producing several books and research studies, sitting on editorial boards, and organizing conferences and workshops. She served as president of the Canadian Library Association, president of the Canadian Association of Special Libraries and Information Services, and chair of the Toronto Chapter of the Special Libraries Association. In addition, she served for many years on the Accreditation Committee of the American Library Association. Her contributions were recognized with numerous awards, including Outstanding Academic Librarian of the Year and Alumni Jubilee Award for Distinguished Service to the Profession. Vivienne retired from York in 2013, but she kept as busy as ever. She joined the Academy for Lifelong Learning, taking workshops and becoming an indispensable committee member. Residents of her condo building recall with gratitude her work as president of the Condo Board. Vivienne was diagnosed with lung cancer last year. When told it was terminal, she opted for MAID. Her loss leaves a huge hole in the lives of her friends. Vivienne was smart, sociable, generous, a doer, a consummate planner and organizer, a charming hostess, sparkling conversationalist, a loving and devoted daughter, the perfect travel partner, and a real pal. Truly a life well lived.

Vivienne was a wonderful early influence on my professional development and, over the years, a truly delightful friend and colleague. She modelled exceptional service and was a caring and thoughtful mentor. More importantly, she somehow managed to weave into our early professional exchanges master classes on Haydn´s symphonies, Hungarian culture, high-German literature, and Canadian history! I was fortunate to encounter her as a young undergraduate and am so grateful to have benefited from her influence as I grew into my academic journey. I will forever remember her.
