W. WESTON Obituary

W. GALEN WESTON O.C., C.V.O., OOnt., B.A., LL.D, DDIV Galen passed away peacefully at home on April 12, 2021, at the age of 80, after a long illness faced with courage and dignity. Beloved husband to The Hon. Hilary Weston; dearest father to Galen G. (Alexandra) and Alannah (Alexander Cochrane); devoted grandfather to Maia, Lola, Graydon, and Griffin. Survived by his siblings, Grainger, Nancy Baron, Wendy Rebanks (Leslie), Gretchen Bauta (Humberto), Camilla Dalglish (Peter), their families and his stepmother Margaret. Predeceased by his parents Garfield and Reta Weston, his brother Garry Weston, and his sisters Miriam Burnett and Barbara Mitchell. Born at Marlow, Buckinghamshire, UK, on October 29, 1940, the youngest of nine children, Galen studied business administration at Huron University College at the University of Western Ontario. In 1961 he launched his career by acquiring and expanding supermarkets and department stores in Ireland. In 1972 he returned to Canada to take charge of Loblaw, a struggling chain of grocery stores that George Weston Limited had controlled since 1947. Over more than four decades of hard work and team effort, Galen led the transformation of Loblaw from near-bankruptcy to what is now Canada's leading retailer, including the creation of President's Choice, the launch of PC Financial, and the acquisition of Shoppers Drug Mart. Concurrently, Galen brought his vision, imagination, and energy to creating Selfridges Group, a collection of iconic department stores, through the acquisition of Brown Thomas and Arnotts in Ireland, Holt Renfrew and Ogilvy in Canada, Selfridges in the UK, and de Bijenkorf in the Netherlands. He had a keen eye for real estate, creating Canada's leading real estate investment trust, Choice Properties, as well as transforming the Oxford Street neighbourhood surrounding Selfridges's London store. Galen's success in business was rooted in his values as a person. With a sense of duty to build upon the legacy of his father and grandfather as entrepreneurs and community leaders, he believed strongly that business was about more than the bottom line. The pleasure he took from getting to know individuals from all walks of life reflected his conviction that people are the foundation of any successful enterprise. And, with infectious optimism and insatiable curiosity, his greatest gift was his ability to inspire others to achieve more than they thought possible. Amid his endless enthusiasm for business, Galen always made time for his other passions. Among them, a lifelong commitment to philanthropy through the Weston Family Foundation, and the time spent with family and good friends who were so central to his life. He will be sorely missed by Hilary. Through 55 years of a deeply loving marriage, they worked as a team in the expansion of the luxury department stores and the development of Windsor, an acclaimed residential community in Florida. They were especially proud of her five years of public service as Ontario's 26th lieutenant governor. But nothing gave them more gratification than their two children, both of whom have risen so commendably to the challenges Galen passed on to them after his retirement in 2016. The family would like to extend their thanks to Pavi Binning, to Dr. Zubina Mawji, Dr. Sandra Black and Dr. Dermot O'Flynn, to nurses Patriz Lopez and Louise Gregoire, to caregiver Sultanah Khan and to Marianne Surmann. They also wish to recognize the many other dedicated individuals who supported Galen at home. A celebration of Galen's life will be held in Toronto at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre Foundation, or a charity of your choice.

My sincere condolences to the Weston family. My connection goes back many years as Weston was the only company my grandfather and my father worked at. My grandfather started with the company in England and was fortunate to be selected to move to Canada to bring the “English Tea” across the pond before the Second World War. He then worked at the Peter Street Toronto location to be joined by my father.

I remember when Galen and Hilary were married, every employee was given a piece of wedding cake, wrapped in a doily with a tag attached which my father proudly brought home. I have many memories but my favourite was going to the bakery on a Saturday morning and getting a cookie right as it came out of the oven.

Galen’s passing is a great loss to the community and to his family. A successful man whose hopes and dreams will be carried on by his family.

Rest In Peace.

I was a proud employee of Loblaw for almost 7 years. I would occasionally run into Mr. Weston in the elevator at 22. He was always very friendly and approachable. A personable man.

More recently, I noticed Mr. Weston at my dentist’s office. Given my strong affiliation to Loblaw, I felt compelled to approach him. And I did. I told him I proudly worked at his company. A man of his stature and nobility, one would expect a more aloof response. Not Mr. Weston. On the contrary. He indulged me—unhurriedly. It was such a privilege to see him again.

Mr. Weston represented more than Weston, Loblaws, and the slew of companies around the world he owned. And as big as all of that is, he was way bigger, still. In so many ways.

Such a nice person. A brilliant man. I was so, so saddened to hear of his passing. Canadian business has lost an icon. But the biggest loss is to his family. My condolences to you, Mrs. Weston, Galen, Alannah, and the rest of the family.
RIP, Mr. Galen Weston.

Having learned of the death of W. Galen, I am deeply saddened.

I have always had the highest regard for him.

He was the epitome of a successful gentleman in business and otherwise and always treated everyone with the utmost of respect.

I realize this is an enormous loss and, hopefully, you may be somewhat comforted by the knowledge that he left the world in a far better state than he found it.

I was so sorry to hear of Galen Westons passing.
He truly was a very empathic owner and cared about all his employees. He will be missed by all who knew him well. He believed in his colleagues in his buisness' and always took the time to speak to each and everyone of them. He knew his employees would and could be the best they could be and he showed that. He understood the colleagues in his stores would give 150 percent to him if he showed them respect and compassion. Leaders like Galen Weston are not easy to come by.

My condolences to the Weston family on the passing of Galen.
I was very fortunate to get to know Galen and his family while working at their cottage in Georgian Bay.
Not only was this the best summer job University student could ask for, it also provided us many opportunities because of Galen’s generosity and belief in young people. He helped us secure internships at his companies in the UK, which enabled me to build my work experiences, and life experience at the same time.
He was a charismatic man who had the ability to make people around him feel at ease. He cared about others and their opinions, making the people around him feel important too.
What a great man, who will be sorely missed by anyone fortunate enough to have known him.

My deepest regret on the hearing of the passing of Galen Weston. I met the family back in 1970s when they had come back from Ireland and stayed at the Hyatt Regency. I took a special interest in serving young Galen his broiled chicken and often wondered to Hilary why her husband was not around so often.
He was busy creating a network of distribution to feed the Canadian public. I continue to shop at his stores whether it be Fortino‘s or No Frills. Thank you Galen for your service and rest in peace.
