Walter MEINIG Obituary

WALTER PAUL MEINIG (Wally) After enjoying a lovely al fresco lunch with the love of his life on a beautiful summer day, Walter died suddenly on August 27, 2021 at the age of 89. Born on August 25, 1932 in Davidson, Saskatchewan, he grew up on a farm in Canwood with his parents, Ernst Paul and Marie (nee Turnow), and his two brothers Wilfred and Eric. After his high school graduation in 1950, Walter started his banking career with Scotiabank gaining experience in Shellbrook, Swift Current, Tisdale, Lloydminster and Star City before being transferred to the bank's executive offices in Toronto. It was Lloydminster, where he would meet his wife of 65 years Jessie (nee Eddleston). Their enduring love and affection were an inspiration to their children: Elaine (Tom Payne), John, Dianne Skinner and Sandra (David Hayes). At Scotiabank, he rose up the corporate ladder, retiring as Senior Vice President in 1992. His many achievements included his appointment as Chief Accountant in 1964, the youngest person to have held that title at the time, and being appointed Chairman of the Board of Riverdale Hospital (now Bridgepoint Health). After his retirement from Scotiabank, he was appointed Managing Director of Scotiabank Insurance (Barbados) Limited. This venture led to his and Jessie's many happy years living in Barbados. He retired from the Board of Scotiabank Insurance (Barbados) in 1999. He remained active as a Director on the board of various companies until 2013. After that time, he and Jessie returned to Toronto and he enjoyed time with his children and his three granddaughters: Mara Payne (Johnny Picklyk), Madeleine Payne (Liam Wolfe) and Megan Skinner (Drew Barootes). His love of golf was legendary, first at St. George's in Toronto and then Royal Westmorland in Barbados. Walter will be remembered by his family and many friends as a man of integrity, keen mind and quick wit. Given COVID restrictions there will be private visitation and service at Mount Pleasant Funeral Centre. If desired, donations in Walter's memory may be made to the Canadian Red Cross or to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

Jesse,So sorry for your loss.He will be missed.
I joined Scotiabank in 1992 to grow the Insurance business and advised Wally in his role as general manager of Scotia Insurance (Barbados) for many years.Wally helped me navigate the Scotiabank culture which was very helpful in my early days at Scoria. .I enjoyed my business visits to Barbados and Saturday morning golf before flying back to Toronto.
May his memory be for a blessing.

My sincere condolences to the family. Wally was a tremendous individual who took me under his wing in the early 90s and mentored me. His wise counsel and willingness to support me as I moved within Scotiabank, played a significant role in my career success. He was always willing to lend an ear, provide a calm demeanour and use his many years of experience to provide perspective. Thanks to your husband, father and grandfather, we was a great corporate role model for me.
