Walter ROSSER Obituary

WALTER WYLIE ROSSER CM, MD, CCFP, FCFP, MRCGP (UK), FCAHS It is with deep and profound sadness that we announce Walter's passing, peacefully on Sunday, October 2, in his 81st year, in Kingston Ontario, after a brief illness. He leaves behind his wife of 56 years, Janet (nee McClung); his children, Tom (Jennifer) and Nancy (Scott); and grandchildren, Anna, Fletcher, Holden and Jacob. Walter was an accomplished and exemplary clinician, teacher, researcher and leader in family medicine for 55 years. He served as chair of four of the five family medicine departments in Ontario: University of Ottawa; McMaster University; University of Toronto and Queen's University, his alma mater, where he was a professor emeritus in his final years. The Walter Rosser Chair in Family Medicine, a position established in his honour by his peers at Queen's in 2017, is a testament to how well-respected he was among his colleagues. His professional accolades are long. Among them are the 2008 lifetime achievement award from the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC). He received the Order of Canada in 2010, for helping to advance the field of family medicine and for contributing to the evolution of primary care research in Canada. In 2012, he was honoured by the CFPC's W. Victor Johnston award, which recognizes renowned Canadian or international family physicians who have made an outstanding leadership contribution to family medicine in Canada or abroad. Walter did both. His collaborations stretched through the Americas and the Caribbean, Europe and Oceania. And in 2015, he was recognized as one of 20 pioneers in family medicine research. That is just a sampling of his achievements. While Walter was highly accomplished in academia and research, he never lost sight of practicing medicine and thousands of people over the years were lucky to have him as their physician. He was a passionate defender of Canada's public health care system. Walter had every reason to be proud, but instead he was humble, kind, patient and caring. He was generous and had a genuine interest in everyone he met. His smile and warmth will be deeply missed. An in-person celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, October 22, 2022, at 1:00 p.m. at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, 130 Clergy St. E., Kingston, ON K7K 3S3. The service will also be livestreamed. To participate virtually, please go the James Reid Funeral Home website, under Walter Rosser's obituary. www.jamesreidfuneralhome.com (613)544-3411. In lieu of flowers, please contribute to the Ottawa Heart Institute, or to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

Dear Janet and family,

I only heard of Walt´s passing today and I was shocked as we have not been in touch for a period of time. Walt was always a special person in my life. He and Janet were always generous, kind, and thoughtful. Despite his national and international accomplishments and recognition, Walt remained an "aw shucks" sort of person to the end. When you were with him you always received all his attention and he treated you as the special one.
We knew each other for years through his tenures at Ottawa, Western, U of T, and Queens. We worked together in Egypt, Tennessee, and virtually. I consider myself fortunate to not only worked with him as a colleague, but also to have called him my friend.
I will miss him much.

To: Janet, Tom, Nancy and your family
I want to do more than send my deepest condolences to you. I want to tell you how important Walt was to me as my closest friend when I was a kid and a teenager. I met Walt along with Ian Stoddart and Ian Macdonald in four year old kindergarten at Connaught School in 1946. I have remained in contact with all three throughout my life. For many years we have made and received phone calls on our birthdays. I last talked to Walt in March 2022 around my birthday. He was looking forward to the Queen´s Meds ´67 - 55th reunions this October. It is important to keep in touch with good friends you had when you were young.
You already know of Walt´s family and medical accomplishments. He was a wonderful friend to me as a kid and a teenager. I spent countless hours with Walt at 7 Orrin Avenue. For years as kids we built rinks in his backyard. My choice to go to Queen´s came from visiting Queen´s in the summer after grade 12 with Walt and his father. Walt occasionally practiced basic medical skills on me when we roomed in the same house when Walt was in 2nd and 3rd year medicine. I could say much more, but all the kind things already said about Walt as an adult, also apply to Walt as kid and teenage.
I will miss Walt and remember him with great fondness.

Dear Janet, Tommy and Nancy,
I only just came across a note from my mother lost in e-mail sorrows. I am so very sad to hear of Walter's passing. I had a very good conversation with him last over the death of my father - he was very comforting. I hope i can offer at least the thought of comfort. (to Tommy - I am well remembering our conversation at Jean's funeral)
((and i think it was eleven million years ago that i last saw Nancy - congratulations on your marriage !!)) Please know i am thinking on all of you with love.

My heart sunk when I heard the sad news of Walter Rosser's passing. Please accept my deepest condolences and prayers for comfort and strength at this time.

I had the greatest pleasure of working with Walter in the early 1990s in the Department of Family and Community Medicine (DFCM), University of Toronto. He was a very strong proponent of rural and community teaching practice (TP) training. In this picture, he was extending congratulations to winners of the Hollister King Awards at the conjoint DFCM Meet Your Preceptor/Preceptee Night and the Ontario College of Family Physicians Business Meetings. Rest in peace Walter.

Dear Janet, Tom, Nancy and families. I have only just learned of Walt's passing. I was saddened and wishes to extend my deepest condolences. He was very kind and welcoming to me when I began the first of what became 7 years in Ontario in a couple of Departments of Family Medicine. Always enthusiastic, he was a wonderful advocate for our discipline.
My deepest sympathies

Janet, please accept our deepest condolences on Walter's passing. While time and distance have worked to keep us away from each other, we have often thought of you both and of the good times we were fortunate enough to have experiences together - from our internship in Toronto in the 60's, to evenings spent in each other's company in Ottawa, Ancaster, and even Washington DC. We still have a recipe for "Janet's Chicken" which we employ from time to time (and Maureen still drinks her wine with a couple ice cubes - a trick you taught us!) Each time we do, and with each memory, we're reminded of the great, kind and gracious man that Walter embodied. The world is a little less smart and caring because of his passing. Please know that you and the family are in our thoughts and prayers, and that we will continue to value our friendship with you both for as long as we have memory. With affection and deep sympathy, Maureen and Dave ([email protected]; [email protected])

Dear Janet and family,
Walter blessed us with his presence over six years serving as the External Examiner for our Family Medicine programme at The University of the West Indies. Many of our current lecturers were examined by him and they recall his calm presence and easy smile. His contributions continue to be felt today.
On behalf of Walter's Caribbean family, please accept our condolences.

Dear Janet and family,

We read about Walt´s death, in today´s Citizen, and want to extend our condolences to you. We have good memories of times spent with you when you lived in ottawa. We were recalling how Walt dropped what he was doing when our 1 year old son fell down our basement stairs. It was Christmas holiday time and our own doctor was away. When have never forgotten his kindness.

Memories of what a great guy he was, as well as an amazing doctor, will, no doubt, help to sustain and comfort you during this very difficult time of grieving and missing him.

Thinking of you,
Gordon and Elsie(Soble) James
