WALTER TUOHY Obituary
October 30, 1934 - January 20, 2025 Walter Tuohy passed away at Northumberland Hills Hospital in Cobourg, Ontario, on January 20, 2025, at the age of 90. Walter is survived by his loving family: his wife of 51 years, Carolyn; his children, Laura and Kevin, and their partners, Matty and Alicia; his grandchildren, Emily, Finn, Rhys and Pyper; his sister, Mary Ann; brother, John (Anne); and brothers-in-law, Greg (Nancy) and Chris (Jo Ann). Walter was predeceased by his sister, Pat; and his parents, Mary and Walter Sr. Walter was born in Chicago on October 30, 1934, to Mary Frances Tuohy and Walter Joseph Tuohy Sr. Though the family, with its four children, moved frequently, they enjoyed precious summers together in Estes Park, Colorado. The Rocky Mountains became a source of joy to which Walter would return with his own young family and later in memory for many years. A man of deep faith, Walter chose a religious vocation, entering the Jesuit order in 1953 and becoming ordained in 1966. That calling took him to Toronto for theological studies at Regis College, followed by graduate work in political science at the University of Toronto. In 1973, he made the life-changing decision to leave the priesthood. Though theology and Jesuit spirituality remained central to his life, that centre then expanded to include his beloved wife, Carolyn, and the family they created together. He continued to serve the community through his career with the Ontario government. Walter was a deep thinker who looked for ways to connect meaningfully with others and encouraged them to think deeply as well. He will be dearly missed, and we are comforted knowing that he has found the peace of mind and spirit that was so important to him. Family and friends are invited to celebrate Walter's life at a visitation on February 2nd, from 4-6 p.m., and a Funeral Mass and reception on February 3rd, at 10:30 a.m., all to be held at Regis College, Toronto. To honour Walter's life, please consider donations to Regis College or Manresa Jesuit Spiritual Renewal Centre.
