Wayne LILLEY Obituary

WAYNE LILLEY Wayne Lilley, known to many as Widge, died October 17, 2021 at the age of 78. Born in Mimico, Ontario, he was skating almost before he walked. A lifelong athlete, Wayne excelled at hockey, lacrosse, sailing and tennis. He was a longtime member of Queen City Yacht Club on Toronto Island, raced his boats with friends and singlehanded, sailed to the Bahamas, and completed a trans-Atlantic crossing. Wayne was an award-winning business journalist and book author. Friends knew him as a witty raconteur, a contrarian from start to finish (his twitter handle was @Bsceptical) and, true to his profession, a staunch seeker and defender of the truth. Family and friends mattered most; he was a proud father and grandfather. Predeceased by his first wife and his sons' mother, Donna Smith Lilley, Wayne is survived by his wife and best friend, Mary Partridge; sons, Shawn Lilley and Jay Lilley (Erica Fyvie); granddaughters, Liv and Grace; sister and brother-in-law, Bunne and Jeremy Painting; sisters-in-law Kathy Partridge, Vivian Partridge (David McColl), Mary Lou Totty and Barb Arnold; beloved nieces and nephews; and countless wonderful, lifelong friends. He will be missed more than words can express. Those who knew Wayne well will understand why he chose the dignity of Medical Assistance in Dying, rather than allow his recent illness to overcome him.

Mary ,Shawn and Jay
I was very fortunate to know Wayne and Donna when we taught at Huntsville. We were the best of friends and shared the joys of new careers, new borns, a beach side snack bar, new year’s celebrations, poker games and northern Ontario partridge hunting. Even though we drifted apart I knew that Wayne was my good friend. It was wonderful to meet Mary and to have recently spent an evening with You and Wayne. Memories last forever

Such a great guy. Though Wayne is only here in spirit he will always be with you, Mary, and never forgotten.

Dear Mary, Shawn, Jay and and families:

I am so sorry to read this morning of Wayne's passing. Wayne served as my don in my freshman year (1966) at Huron College on third floor south O'Neill's Men's Residence. Small in stature, he was a giant in so many other ways. He really was a friend to us all, helping us acclimatize to university living. His door was always open. I believe he studied English language and literature as an undergrad which would account for his career and profession. I lost touch with Wayne after that year as he graduated and moved on. We never crossed paths at future Huron events. May he rest in peace and may you find solace and comfort n all the happy memories you have of hims a a wonderful father and husband.
