Wayne ROBERTS Obituary

WAYNE ROBERTS September 30, 1944 - January 20, 2021 Wayne lived joyfully and expansively to the end and died peacefully at home, six months after being diagnosed with leukemia. He was a beloved husband and soulmate to Lori (Stahlbrand), an engaged and compassionate father to Jaime and Anika, an adoring grandfather to Dorothy and godfather to Ralfe and Adam (Sacco), and a true friend and mentor to many. Wayne was a thought leader, activist, writer, scholar, and social media guru in the fields of food policy, sustainability, labour, and social justice. He taught us how to live with integrity and build community as he worked to create a more equitable, ecological, and joyful world. Special thanks to the dedicated healthcare workers and the many friends who rallied around Wayne and the family - we felt your love and support, even during a pandemic. A celebration of Wayne's life will be livestreamed on facebook.com/Dr.WayneRoberts on Sunday, February 21, 2021 at 2 p.m. EST.

Dr. Wayne Robert was a great wise man with excellent personality dedicated to local agriculture and food security of diverse communities. We are mourning. My sincere condolences to the bereaved family.

I lost a great mentor and friend forever. I had the opportunity to work with him since 2003 as Board of Director of TFPC in many events and occasions. Canada lost Dr Wayne, who was a Think Tank on local farming, environment, sustainable agriculture, food security and food justice.

I knew Way e from his writings and postings, and was once lucky to meet him. He was dressed up as a carrot! I was touched and humbled by his kind ways, he was a great Canadian who enriched the lives of many.

I was first introduced to Wayne when I was a grad student at York - through his writing and many publications, which in turn inspired me to learn more. Wayne had a real gift with words, tackling tough food issues while presenting his work in an approachable way, engaging and impassioning his readers. I then was lucky enough to meet him in person, introduced by his wife, Lori one evening last winter. Our small MES graduate group shared some food and quite a few laughs. One of a kind. My deepest condolences to Lori and their family.

We met Wayne 20 years ago, when he invited us to a Toronto Food Policy round table at Montgomery's Inn. We were interested in starting a food business focusing on gluten free, local and organic. Generous with his time, very supportive of new ventures and honoured us at Molly B's Gluten Free Kitchen with the first Local Food Hero award from the Toronto Food Policy Council. He was a special person and will be missed.

I had a chance to meet Wayne when I was part of a 5 year struggle to preserve food growing soil in Edmonton. I so appreciated his sense of humor and his thoughtfulness on how we should organize. I am so grateful that our paths crossed

My father, Bert Deveaux, is very sad to hear of Wayne's passing. He remembers how Lori and Wayne met when they came over one evening to visit him and Suzanne. He remembers Wayne as being very intelligent but equally down-to-earth. No matter what situation he was in, he always thought about how it would effect others--and he wanted to make things better for workers, and those who were poor and powerless. He didn't preach about it, it was just in his blood. He knew how to laugh and Bert recalls some funny moments they had together -- including having to share a double bed one time during their travels together Ontario because it was the only room left! Bert was horrified and Wayne couldn't stop laughing at his reaction. Our condolences to Lori and their children. Wayne was a wonderful person and the world is a little kinder and brighter because of him.

Whilst I was only a Twitter connection, Wayne made it worthwhile opening social media just to read his insightful posts.
I learnt so much from him. I am so grateful to have shared that small but meaningful connection.
God Bless you Wayne as you transition to a place that is organic, sustainable and progressive.
May the Angels gather around you lifting you into the bliss.

Wayne was a true inspiration and hero to me.

In his last days, even in waning health, he continued to fight hard for food security and to amplify our efforts for universal basic income in Canada.

A man of honour and virtue. Thank you Wayne. May you rest in peace, knowing that Canada is a better place because of you.

Wayne was so generous to me, a stranger, with his time and advice so many years ago...he pointed me in the right direction, and now I'm an organic farmer, and loving every moment. Thank you Wayne for your guidance and encouragement. I know you've touched many people's lives in similar ways. You will be greatly missed. My deepest condolences to your whole family.

I am so sad to hear of Wayne's passing. He was such a genuine cheerleader, for our communities, for our planet, and for each and every person who is adversely affected by our broken food system. Our paths crossed several times as I was involved in a number of local food and food justice initiatives in Hamilton for many years. I was always impressed with Wayne's friendly, upbeat and optimistic outlook. He made our community's push toward equitable access to sustainable and culturally appropriate food seem so do-able, knowing we had such an amazing advocate on our side. My deepest condolences to Lori and the rest of the family.

My sympathy and prayers for Lori and all who were close to Wayne. We first met as student journalists at the U of T Varsity in the early 70's. I remember Wayne then as a powerful writer and advocate for social justice. We met again in the early 90's when our children attended Beaches Alternative School in Toronto, a progressive school where parents were very involved in the day to day life of the school. Then finally after many years away in Western Canada I returned to Toronto and met Wayne while he attended a concert of the Beach Chorale which I sang in along with Lori. I am familiar with his work in sustainable food and other justice issues, and know he will be greatly missed. My daughter Monica is a community chef at The Stop and fully engaged in the work of that food program.

Wayne, thank you so much for all the care and energy you gave to so many citizens, for so many decades. I didn’t know you personally but followed your work. Your book “Get a Life....” was grounded in good values, and helped many youngsters in my families choose careers in a more thoughtful and comprehensive way. I will miss your Facebook postings. I hope your loved ones are comforted knowing how much he was valued by thousands of people like me.
