WILLIAM BATEMAN Obituary
(October 24, 1944 – February 12, 2026) William "Bill" Ennis Bateman passed away peacefully, on February 12, 2026, after a short illness. Born in Toronto, he was the eldest son of Dr. James and Dr. Beverly Bateman of Toronto. Bill graduated from Upper Canada College and went on to attend Trinity College at the University of Toronto. He established a successful Toronto-based law firm and practiced corporate law for four decades. After retiring from active practice, Bill moved to Bethany, Ontario, where he embraced life beyond the city. There he was happiest sitting on the porch of his beloved farmhouse, quietly reading a book. He devoted himself to numerous volunteer roles and fully indulged his lifelong passions, including collecting antique military vehicles and artifacts related to the First World War. A gentleman farmer in spirit and practice, he was also the proud owner of multiple antique motorcycles and remained a long-suffering, loyal fan of the Buffalo Bills. Bill was a devoted big brother to Jamie and Jeff; a loving father to Beverley and David; and a proud grandfather to William and Spencer, Riley and Avery. He was first married to Margaret Bateman (née Stewart), and later to Wendy Cooper. Bill was a cherished stepfather to Wendy's children, Kate and Joel Vollum; and a beloved "Bumpa" to their children, Mimi, Rhett, and Rheya. The family extends heartfelt thanks to the compassionate staff at Lakeridge Health for their care and kindness. A private family gathering will be held as an initial goodbye, with a celebration of life to follow at a later date.
