WILLIAM BOYD Obituary

Passed away December 7, 2024, in Toronto, Ontario. He leaves behind two children he adored, Adam and Pippa; as well as three grandkids, Anthony, Andrew and Trevor. Bill was born on October 17, 1933, in Victoria, BC, and brought up in Ottawa and at the boarding school, now Lakefield College School, in Lakefield, Ontario. He took science for two years at Carleton University, then moved to Vancouver and the University of British Columbia where he switched to English. Upon graduation, he began a career in journalism that, besides Vancouver, took him to live in Edmonton, Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, Quebec City, London, and Paris. Although not a sports writer, his passion for hockey led him to write two hockey books, All Roads To Hockey and Hockey Towns.

Billy was a solid player in our old beer leagues, a great fellow, on and off the ice...

I had the great pleasure of becoming friends with Bill while working on his book, Hockey Towns. I was his editor at Doubleday. We remained friends for several years. I very much regret losing touch with him during Covid. Today, I had to drop off something at the building where I had last visited him, and when I inquired after him was told he no longer lived there. I am very sad to be reading his obituary. I will always feel great fondness for him. My condolences to his children and grandchildren. He spoke often of you with much love. xo

We are so very sorry for your loss. We enjoyed our talks and visits with Bill. He was a very kind man. When he visited Trevor at Christmas, he would remember our kids as well and would bring them presents. He was very thoughtful. It was a real pleasure seeing the joy Trevor and Bill shared together. He will be missed.
