February 2, 1929 – April 2, 2025 Died at Sunnybrook Hospital in Toronto on April 2, in his 97th year, surrounded by a rich outpouring of care and love. Born in Montreal on February 2, 1929, to Thomas Broadhurst of Poynton, UK and Mary Agnes Shea of Montreal, Bill was a loving and beloved husband to Arden Patricia Spence from 1962 until her passing in 2023, and was predeceased by his dear first wife, Wilma Helen May (d. 1960). Bill leaves 8 children: Thomas (Elly), David (Lee), Karen (James), Deborah (Tim), Joanna (Fodé), Laurence (Susan), Maura, and Jeremy (Mary). Accompanying them are 19 grandchildren, spread across 4 decades: Joe, Peter, David, Annie, Elizabeth, Meredith, Nicholas, Andrew, Veronica, Christopher, Kerfalla, Djibril, Daphne, Charlotte, Owen, Fiona, Hailey, Eleanor, and Matilda; and two great grandchildren: Maya and Audrey. Dad and Mom raised their children with unwavering love, with indefatigable care, and with bottomless generosity. Together, they joyfully doted on their grandchildren. Bill was the eldest and last surviving of four siblings: Rev. Thomas Paul, CSB (1932–2018), David George (1942–2018), and Dr. Carole Ann (1933–2020). Growing up in Moore Park, Bill attended St. Michael's College School and the University of St. Michael's College, graduating with a Bachelor of Commerce in 1951. Joining Price Waterhouse that same year, he earned his CA designation in 1954 and FCA in 1965. Bill ascended through the ranks at PW, was made partner in 1965, partner-in-charge of the Toronto office 1977–1985, and, finally, Chairman and Senior Partner 1985–1990. After retirement from PW in 1991, Bill became the first lay Chancellor of Temporal Affairs for the Archdiocese of Toronto (1997–2001). He worked diligently to secure the ongoing stability and success of the Archdiocese. Bill's professional and community activities were too expansive to enumerate fully. He offered enthusiastic service, often in a leadership role to: the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario (ICAO), the Public Accountants Council of Ontario, the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants (CICA), the University of St. Michael's College Alumni Association, the Varsity Fund, the Senate and Governing Council at the University of Toronto, the Pontifical Institute of Mediaeval Studies, the Ontario Council on University Affairs, The National Club, The Granite Club, ShareLife, Providence Centre, the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, and the St. Michael's College School, St. Michael's Choir School, and the Toronto French School advisory boards. He also accepted government appointments to: the Ontario Council of University Affairs, the Ontario Government Finance Commission, 2 Royal Commissions, the Toronto Stock Exchange and the Ontario Press Council. Bill's work in these many roles was always marked by expertise, kindness, and common sense. Bill's honours include the ICAO Award of Outstanding Merit in 1991, the CICA Certificate of Merit in 1997, the University of Toronto Arbor Award in 1990, and his investment as Honorary Fellow (1992) and the conferral of the degree of Doctor of Sacred Letters, honoris causa, on him (2002), both by the University of St. Michael's College. Bill was also installed in the Order of St. Gregory (1991) and elevated in that Order (2001) by Pope John Paul II. The citation from that USMC Fellowship describes Bill as "devoted to his Church and family, dedicated to education, to culture and to public service, and an example of professional excellence and integrity in the business world," and notes astutely that, "he is a man who goes about his many tasks humbly, generously and quietly. He does not seek public notice, but being the person he is, public notice seeks him." This was a long, full life, well-lived. Bill loved travelling the world with Arden, but perhaps most relished time with her and their children and grandchildren at the family cottage in the Kawarthas. Bill lived for family dinners, inside and outside the home. He was a passionate collector of Canadian art and was a diligent photographic chronicler of his growing family. He was a family man, full of calm, humility, grace, wisdom, and charm. The Broadhurst children offer a heartfelt expression of gratitude to The Briton House, where Bill and Arden resided since 2017, and to their caregivers these past three-plus years, in particular to Weng, Michael, Nino, Nhiel, Christopher, and Marky. Their skilled, tender, and dignifying care will never be forgotten. From the bottom of dozens of hearts: Thank you. The family will receive friends at the Humphrey Funeral Home A.W. Miles – Newbigging Chapel, 1403 Bayview Avenue (south of Davisville) on Thursday, April 10th from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. A Catholic Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Bill and Arden's home parish, Our Lady of Perpetual Help, 78 Clifton Road, Toronto, on Friday, April 11th at 10:30 a.m. Interment is immediately afterward at Mount Hope Cemetery.
