CAMERON, William James
of Victoria, B.C. August 3rd, 1920 - November 18, 2000 born at Stony Plain, Alta. eldest of fourteen children moved in 1928 to homestead near Drayton Valley. Attended high school at Alberta College, Edmonton graduating at Stony Plain. Enlisted in RCAF in 1940, trained and commissioned as a Spitfire Pilot, shot down over English Channel and later in Sicily, where taken prisoner of war. Spent twenty-two months at Stalag Luft III, survivor of the Great Escape. Earned B.A. in Economics at the University of B.C. Reenlisted in air force as flight instructor in Europe, Sardinia and Ontario, followed by administrator in Department of Supply and Services, Ottawa. Retired to Victoria in 1990, remaining physically fit and active in numerous activities including social, political and environmental issues. He was cheerful through his brief illness and looked forward to his next life. Survived by sons, Guy of Victoria, Fraser (Christina) of Toronto, daughter Vanessa (Adrian) Brown and grandchildren, Kahli and Carrick of Brisbane, Australia, also five brothers and three sisters in Alberta. Predeceased by wife, Daphne in 1998 and daughter Hilary in 1966. No services by request. Hayward's Victoria (250) 385-3505.
