I am so shocked and saddened to hear of Mr Dart's passing. He was a great teacher and such an inspiration to me and others. I will always remember Mr Dart for the UCC Model Parliaments and our trip to Greece with Mrs Saul. Rest easy and I'm sure you are inspiring people where you are now...

In life, you have very few greats. What I mean by that is having an exceptional person, place, or experience that stands out to you so vividly that it never leaves you. Mr. Dart, or Steve (which he preferred to be called by his former students), was one of those greats. He was truly a generational talent, a McDavid or Matthews of the teaching world. For so many of us, he was our favourite teacher. His kindness, intelligence, compassion, understanding, and humour made him stand out above the rest. He had a way about him that made you love him instantly. He demonstrated great wit and was a true gentleman. He was probably the coolest person I have ever met, which you probably wouldn´t know or understand unless you had the opportunity to spend some time with him. I remember looking forward to going to his classes. Most classes in high school were something you had to endure, whereas a class with Mr. Dart was a delight. His passion was contagious, and that feeling stayed with his students as we went on to find ourselves. One of my peers, who is now an educator, mentioned that Mr. Dart left such an impression on us that, more than 20 years later, we still feel the positive impact of having him as a teacher. I went on to become an educator myself, something I´m not sure would have happened if it wasn´t for Mr. Dart/Steve. He was a role model and an inspiration, and I try my best to demonstrate the same excitement for teaching that he showed us way back when with my students today. As an adult, I met with him a couple of times to tell him how much he meant to me, and I have to say I had a hard time calling him by his first name since I respected him so damn much! It was almost like calling your Dad by his first name, which is something I would never do. Ultimately, I almost stopped calling him anything because I didn´t want to call him Steve, and he didn´t want me to call him Mr. Dart. I was surprised and humbled that he was happy to hang out with a kid from over two decades ago. It was an honour to have known him, and we are all blessed to have met such a fantastic person! You don´t come across people like Mr. Dart very often, and having his presence in our lives was a true gift. Thank you for making us who we are today. To his family, I send my love and my condolences. I will forever keep him in my thoughts and prayers. To one of the great ones, may you rest in peace.

My sincere condolences to Mr Dart's loved ones. His is one of the greats in the teaching world. He was passionate, empathetic, and an overall wonderful person. I feel extremely fortunate to have been in his class in high school. He taught me family studies (social science), and I will always remember his encouragement to us to express our thoughts through the famous line "Could you elaborate, expectorate and communicate?" The world has lost a great person, but I know his legacy of being a great educator lives on in all of us alumni.

I wanted to share the article I wrote about Mr. Dart and Mr. Desmarais back when I was in high school. Obviously it´s not in digital form but I did my best. I Hope you can read it. Anyone who wants to see the full article may contact me at [email protected] By the way when, this article came out, the students really loved learning more about Mr. Dart and Desmarais. And I went onto journalism school...

Mr.Dart was a brilliant and inspiring educator who truly brought out the best in those lucky enough to count themselves among his students. His seemingly boundless energy and enthusiasm was absolutely infectious. I loved every moment of his classes - he was my all-time favourite teacher - as I´m sure was the case for so many of his students. Thanks to Mr.Dart, I will forever seek to thoughtfully "elaborate and elucidate" upon my ideas, as he so often prompted us to do. My deepest condolences go out to those who knew him best. He will be lovingly remembered and missed by so many.

A truly incredible educator. Anyone who got Mr. dart on their schedule was super lucky. He was a dedicated teacher and so many people´s "favourite". As an educator myself I try to infuse the energy, passion and humour into my classes that Mr. Dart did every single day. My condolences to his family.

We are heartbroken to hear of the unexpected passing of our dear friend Steve. I first met Steve in 1979 at Earl Haig and for forty-five years we remained best friends despite the physical distances that occasionally separated us. Steve had a great impact on my life and he was the reason I took a job at A.Y. Jackson S.S. where I was able to work with wonderful colleagues and a brilliant group of students. Steve made me a better teacher, a better person, and perhaps most importantly he made me laugh and laugh and laugh. I know that all those whose minds and hearts he touched will miss him deeply. I have lost my best friend and I am shattered but hopefully with the passage of time , I will smile and laugh again at the memory of all the wonderful and funny times we spent together. To Anna and Chris, who we have known almost as long as Steve since Anna was pregnant with Chris at our wedding, we send our love and condolences over the loss of such a wonderful and generous human being.

I taught with Steve for many years at A.Y Jackson. He was the epitome of excellence in every defining way. He was THE consummate teacher...innovative, captivating and entertaining, all while being sincerely interested in every student in his class.
I will miss our conversations and laughter that we shared over the years.

Mr. Dart taught me history at AY Jackson in the 80s. He was a great teacher and had a big impact on my life. I remember him telling me that I would make a great lawyer (I have been practicing law for 30 years now). May his memory be a blessing.

Mr. Dart, a favourite teacher for many of my friends and I. He was like Robin Williams in Dead Poet Society. Inspiring us with his soft and strong leadership, he allowed us to learn in our own way, impacting not only how we viewed history but more importantly how we thought and analyzed information. And also having the best time doing it. Condolences to his friends and family.

I feel so lucky to have known Steve Dart, duly lionized by his wonderful son Chris. Steve and Anna are the parents all of us wish we had, and Steve was also clearly the teacher every student wanted to be connected to forever.
I am so sad I will never again get to talk with him about politics, laugh at one of his dry jokes, or hear how proud he is of Chris's amazing work as a journalist.
I'm sending endless love to Anna. You are such a strong person, but my heart has been hurting for you so much. <3

Mr. Dart taught me at AY in the late 80s/early 90s and was one of a kind. I have not seen him since high school, but to this day whenever anyone ever asks who my favourite teacher was in school, my answer is always Mr. Dart. He made learning fun and memorable unlike any other teacher. My sincerest condolences to his family and friends.

I met Steve 30 years ago when I was the tour guide for the annual AY Jackson field trip to Washington D.C. Steve and I became fast friends and quickly discovered many shared interests, namely our love of teaching and the game of golf. I spent the past 20 years as a college instructor in Barrie and enjoyed sharing stories and laughter while we chased a little white ball at some of our favourite golf courses each summer. I will miss his quick wit, his energy and curiosity, and his kindness and compassion. Steve - thank you for being my friend. I know you will be with me in spirit on the golf course this summer and I will remember the fun we had chasing that little white ball. Sending love to Anna and Chris and all those who are missing this wonderful human.

I'm so very sorry to hear this news. Like many others, I was a student of Mr. Dart's at Jackson and also just saw him at the reunion and caught up with him there - I'm especially glad that I had this opportunity. He was a great teacher, and a fun guy - this is what I remember most about him. I used to tease him about how I could always tell that it was Friday, because it was the only day he would wear jeans, but still with a shirt and a "casual" tie. I had him for my Society class, and I remember him showing us the famous Seinfeld "shrinkage" episode to show us how expressions develop... while he always talked about "bondage" and "groupage" when referring to group work, which was guaranteed to make us giggle. My condolences to all of his family, friends, and loved ones. Please know that we appreciated you sharing him with us, and that he will live on through all of the stories that we remember and share with others.

I am so sorry to hear that Mr. Dart has passed. He was truly one of my favourite teachers and his passion for history fostered a lifelong interest in the subject for me as I continued with many history electives when I went off to university. I had the pleasure of seeing Mr. Dart for the first time in almost 30 years in October for the AYJ reunion and not only did he remember me but he remembered a very specific debate we had all those years ago. He had such a wonderful memory and an incredible ability to teach with such enthusiasm. I was one of the many thousands of students who were lucky enough to walk into his classroom. Sending my condolences to his family and all who loved him.

I just saw Mr Dart at the AYJ get together in October. He along with Mr Desmarais were my favourite teachers. He was dedicated, caring, passionate about history and inspirational. I loved seeing him again at the AYJ gathering where he seemed to constantly have a ring of students around him. Back in the day, he even wrote me a letter of recommendation for a summer job. It´s not a stretch to say he was inspirational. I interviewed him and also Mr Desmarais for an article I wrote for the school newspaper -The Core. They were both hilarious. I still have that article. I´m grateful for all he did for me and for all his other students. He was a man I really admired and looked up to. I´ll miss him.

Mr. Dart and Ms Saul taught me American History at AYJ in the mid 1980s. What an honour and a privilege to have these learned, passionate teachers who clearly loved their profession and the students they taught. Our class went to Washington, DC which brought the course content to life. Seeing Mr Dart again at the AYJ Oct reunion was truly special and we had a wonderful chat. He was as engaged and as curious as ever. Picture attached I´m on the left.
So very sorry to hear of his passing. RIP Mr. Dart. You made a difference.

Mr. Dart was my history teacher at AY Jackson. I spent many hours in the history office hanging out with Mr. Dart, Mrs. Saul and Dr. Hyland, they were the dream team of history teachers! I´m truly saddened to hear the news of his passing, I just saw him at the AY Jackson reunion and we were both overjoyed to see one another! It was like no time had passed. Sending my deepest condolences to his family. I´m honored to have been one of his students. The pictures are from our class trip to Washington in, I think 1984 or 1985. RIP Mr. Dart

So sad to learn of Mr. Dart's sudden passing.
I was a student of his in grades 12 and OAC at A.Y.Jackson SS in the mid '90's.
He made an immediate impression on me with his ability to draw a perfect circle while stating "this is .. the world!" as class commenced.
I enjoyed our discussions after class. He was a very engaging teacher who left a positive mark on my young life.
