WILLIAM EVERETT "BILL" HAWKES obituary

WILLIAM HAWKES Obituary

(July 21, 1947 – December 6, 2025) Born in Skowhegan, Maine, Bill moved with his family to Canada and grew up in Estevan, SK, and Erin and Morrisburg, Ontario. After many adventures as a miner, a neon sculptor, a social worker, an art teacher, and an encyclopedia salesman, among other things, Bill settled into the antiques business in Toronto. He ran The Little Store in Behind on King Street from 1972 to 1988, and he founded the Harbourfront Antique Market in 1976. For many years, he bought and sold antiques in Toronto and up and down the eastern seaboard. He had a great eye. Bill was predeceased by his parents, Everett and Geraldine Hawkes. He is survived by his partner, Gale Siegfried; his sisters, Lois Codling and Sylvia Lassam; and by his nieces, Nina and Claire Lassam. Cremation has taken place. A private gathering to remember Bill will be scheduled in the New Year. The family would like to thank Drs. Kukreti, Malik and Said at the Princess Margaret Hospital for their exceptional care, and to the staff of the Palliative Care Unit at PMH for their kindness at the end of Bill's life.

One summer while apprenticing with my uncle in Toronto, Bill allowed me to stay in his apartment. Surrounded by antiques, oddities, rugs and collections, he welcomed me into a world of beauty and craft. Later that summer, He hired me to do some marketing drawings for an antique market he was hoping to fit out and that little commission introduced me not only to antiques but how a visual image can have a lasting impact on people. Today those lessons still resonate. Funny. Insightful. Personal. Loving. His stories made life colorful and his humor made laughing easy. Thank you for all the Great memories, Bill. Love you, man.

Bill H was a very good and longtime friend of my husband, Bill Fussner. Many times when Bill returned from antique hunting, I would join my Bill wherever the truck was and inevitably, Bill H would show his kindness by gifting me with something. He was fascinated by so many things and always had interesting things to say about what he had collected, where he had been and the roads he took to get there and back. It's hard to believe he is gone. I will miss him and his quirky perspective. Rest in peace, Bill.

Remember Bill first as a young lad in Morrisburg who was around because of a certain attachments to one of my sisters, than as his minor lacrosse coach and lastly as a Toronto antique dealer. Spent a few visits with him at his little shop and at the harbourfront Market. Rest in Peace, Bill.
