William HAZEN Obituary



HAZEN, William
formerly of Duck Cove, Saint John, died on May 8th, 2000, at his residence at Windsor Court, 10 Barton Crescent, Fredericton. Born April 9, 1911, he was the son of the late Arthur Prissick Hazen and Agnes Isabel (Blizard) Hazen, and husband of the late Hazel (Teed) Hazen. He was educated at Rothesay Collegiate School. During World War II he pioneered public housing in Canada and became the first manager of the Saint John Housing Authority. He was Rear Commodore and an honorary life member of the Royal Kennebecasis Yacht Club, an honorary life member of the Eclectic Reading Club, a former president of the New Brunswick Historical Society and served for several years as historian of the St. George's Society. He was a member of the Saint John Naturalists' Club, the Nature Trust of New Brunswick, the Saint John Probus Club, St. George's Society and the New Brunswick Museum. He is survived by three daughters: June (Theodore) Verspyck, Wilton, Connecticut, Sandra (Melvin) Turner, St. Andrews, and Jane (Richard) Tarn, Fredericton, eight grandchildren: Jay (Ruth) Verspyck, Arlington, MA, Jillian (Richard) Winpenny, Somerville, MA, Nicole (Charles) Rand, Meredith, NH, Chipman Verspyck, West Hurley, NY, James Turner, Montreal, QC, Katya (Maurice) Cline, Riverview, NB, Johanna (Bernard) Griffith, Calgary, AB, and Christina Tarn of Saint John, NB, ten greatgrandchildren, one brother, Arthur (Helen) Hazen, Mitchell, ON, three nephews in Ontario and a niece in Nova Scotia. A memorial service is being held at Windsor Court on Thursday, May 11, at 2:00 p.m. McAdam's Funeral Home, Fredericton, is in charge of arrangements. The family requests no visitation. Donations to the Nature Trust of New Brunswick, The Salvation Army or to a charity of the donor's choice would be appreciated.
