William IRISH Obituary

WILLIAM ALBERT IRISH Born 1937. After willfully out-maneuvering death a dozen times in his storied life, Bill's family is profoundly sad to announce his sudden passing on June 8, 2019. Father, friend, and devoted husband; artist, lumberjack, cartographer, Mountie, director, house builder, teacher, author and, once upon a time, bouncer. Born in Calgary; son to Albert and Mayme; loving brother to Marilyn and Margy. Bill was a man of a thousand stories, happily heard many times over. Known to many as one of the founders of The Partners' Film Co., Bill's closest partner was his wife of 30 years, Kathryn, with whom he shared a big love that merged two families. His career was anchored in the television commercial and advertising industries. He had a knack for directing children actors and bringing out the best in them... a skill he continued with his own children who survive him: Mark, Kate, Jason, Danielle and David. Proud grandfather to Hannah and father-in-law to Bonnie and Allison. There will be no funeral or memorial at Bill's request. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the ALS Society of Canada in honour of his beloved Kathryn.

Psalm 90:10 says that the days of our years are 70 years, And if because of special mightiness they are 80 years.
May the memories of the wonderful times you shared together bring a smile and joy in your heart.

He was inspiring. He was kind. He made ordinary life seem extraordinary. And he could really draw. Wow. My condolences, Irish family. Thank you, Bill.

Art Director Michael Barter (RIP), producer Peter Barchou (RIP), and I hired Bill to demolish a snowmobile. It was my very first TV commercial, and Bill, a 33 year-old prone to bouts of thinking, was my first director. I've forgotten the script I wrote, but the compelling footage Bill unleashed needed no words. In spite of his best efforts, happily, the sled survived. Bill's Motoski work took product demos to a new level, something Bill did in many advertising categories. Like so many others, I learned that giving a spot to Bill was a sure way to get a raise. Condolences to Bill's family and friends.

Bill Irish, entered our industry and without any effort lifted it to a new level of Creativity and Humanity. If you didn't know him personally then remember the scene of the farmer lifting a bicycle from the back of his truck that fulfilled his young son's dream. All the joy and love in the child's eyes was pure Bill. That scene is locked in heart.
(He upset this insomniac on every shoot when, at lunch-break, he went behind the set and napped on the concrete floor.)

So glad we had a chance to meet him before he passed. What a surprise to find out that I had worked on location with his company, Partners, when we filmed a HighLiner commercial here in Lunenburg.

Bill leaves us with many wonderful memories of his talent and humanity. One story: During a shoot in Montreal, I was held up at gunpoint in my hotel room. By the time Bill arrived for a scheduled pre-production meeting, the Montreal cops were there. As a bewildered Bill entered the scene, I remember his Mountie background and introduced him to the cops with, "Give them the secret handshake, Bill."

My and my wife's condolences to the Irish family.

So sorry to hear of Bill's passing. He was a vastly talented director. He was a true artist and, from my observations, one who could bring out the best in actors. Some directors strut around and bully, forcing their "vision" on people. Not Bill. He spoke softly and gently and allowed actors to make their own contributions. His work speaks for itself- beautiful and human.

In all my career as a teacher, Bill along with his dear wife, Kate, were among the finest people and parents I have ever had the pleasure to know. Bill was a man of particular insight and talent, and a great Canadian artistic treasure. I am very sorry to hear of his death and I send my sincere condolences to his son David (my former student) and all of Bill's grieving family.

I wish I had known him more closely. What I do know is that he was one of the if not THE most respected and beloved man in our industry leaving a legacy of quality and compassion behind. He will be greatly missed and his memory cherished.

One of the kindest, gentlest, supremely talented people I had the pleasure of working with in the industry. He was simply unmatched as a film director of people. He had magic in his ability to tell a story. He was I believe an art director by craft and had an eye that was simply amazing.
My condolences go out to his family. A wonderful human light sadly out.
