MACKAY, William Brydon Fraser
KStJ, B.Sc. (E.E.), B.Met. E., M.S., Ph D, D. Sc. (Hon), FIM, FASM, Professor Emeritus of Metallurgical Engineering, Queens University. After a long life of honour, integrity and contribution William Mackay died peacefully, surrounded by those who loved him on Wednesday, September 29th, 2004 at Kingston General Hospital. Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on May 21, 1914, the son of Dr. D.S. Mackay and Catherine Agnes Mackay (nee Brydon). Beloved husband of the late Kathleen Griffiths. He will be deeply missed by his three sons and their families, Daniel and his wife Frances, William and his wife Fannie, John and his wife Nancy and grandchildren Jennifer, Lesley, Erinn, Courtney, James, William, Michelle and Elizabeth. He was educated at the Royal Military College of Canada, The University of Manitoba B.Sc. (E.E.) 1938 and the University of Minnesota B.Met.E. 1939. After being mobilized with the Canadian Army in 1939, he transferred to the RCAF and retired with the rank of Wing Commander. Returning to Minnesota he obtained an M.S. in 1947, a Ph.D in 1953 and was appointed as an Assistant Professor in Metallurgical Engineering. Returning to Canada he joined Atlas Steels in 1956 and served in various capacities including that of Chief Metallurgist and Manager of Research and Development. In 1966 he received an appointment with Queen's University as Professor and Head of the Department of Metallurgical Engineering, a position he held for 11 years. He was acting Dean, Faculty of Applied Science from 1976-1977 and Associate Dean for Research from 1978-1981. He since has served as an Adjunct Professor of Metallurgical Engineering and as a part time Professor of Mechanical Engineering at RMC. In 1984 he was named Professor Emeritus of Metallurgical Engineering and in 1993 he received the Degree of Doctor of Science (Hon). He was active in many organizations including St. John Ambulance and the Boy Scouts of Canada. Cremation, no visitation. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm on Sunday October 3rd 2004 at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church Kingston, Ontario. In lieu of flowers memorial donations to the charity of your choice would be greatly appreciated by the family. Interment to follow at a later date in the family plot at St. John's Cemetery, Winnipeg, Manitoba. Arrangements entrusted to Kingston Cremation Services (613) 634-0463.
