William MACTAGGART Obituary

WILLIAM GRANT MACTAGGART Of Guelph/Eramosa Township. December 28, 1940 - December 23, 2018 Sadly as a result of a car accident, with his loving family by his side, Bill died peacefully at Hamilton Health ICU. Beloved husband of Leslie (nee Hurst); loving father of Lisa (Leo Medeiros); Will (Michele); Ryan (Kelly); and stepfather of Mike Hryn (Nicole). Bill was the proud Grandpa of Levi and Denya Medeiros, William and Esme, Fynn and Ainsley and Holden and Clint Hryn. Dear brother of Evelyn Farr (late Bruce) and John (Bonnie) and loved uncle to many nieces and nephews and their partners. Dear son in law of Doris Hurst. Bill was born in King Township to Pearl and Fergus Mactaggart and it was on his family farm where he established his lifetime love of farming and raising animals. He graduated from Victoria College, (U of T) in 1963 and was awarded 'The Prince Philip' Gold Medal for the highest standing in general science. He then attended the University of Guelph for his M.A. in Physics which he completed in 1965. He started his career as a High School Teacher then became the Science Consultant for the Wellington County Board. He made a career change to become an Investment Advisor and worked for 30 years building a family business that still operates today. His hobby/lifetime passion was raising and breeding Purebred Suffolk Sheep and he was well known in the sheep community. He regularly showed at the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto, the Erin Fall Fair and Rockton Fair. Bill loved restoring heritage buildings, making furniture, designing and building garden architecture, growing dahlias and raspberries, supporting all Toronto sports teams, working on Sudokus and especially, his Thursday nights out with the boys. He most recently and proudly completed the second half of the drystone wall in front of the farm. He was a person with a generous spirit who always loved spending time with his family and friends often while enjoying a nice glass of wine. Bill loved travelling especially to Costa Rica. Please join us in a celebration of Bill's life on Sunday, January 13 at the Cutten Fields, 190 College Ave E, in Guelph from 1-4 p.m. Our family would like to thank all those who cared for Bill in his last days and continue to care for us as we adjust to the devastating absence of our dynamo Dad and loving husband. To honour Bill's legacy, our family would like to establish a scholarship fund for students at the Ontario Veterinary College at the University of Guelph.
