William MAXWELL Obituary

WILLIAM ROBERT MAXWELL, QC 1934 - 2021 Our beloved Billy went peacefully and gently on May 15, 2021 as I held his hand. After so many months of COVID restrictions, the thing he wanted most was to see his children, John, Georgia and Julia, who were able to visit in the last week of his life thanks to the Kensington Hospice. He really missed seeing Audrey but loved hearing her messages. His last words to me were "Charlotte, you are the nicest girl in world", to his children "stick together". We would have celebrated our 61st anniversary on June 25th. He leaves his sister Sally and husband John, niece Kimberly, nephews Peter, James, Charlie, grand- nieces Elizabeth, Carolyn, Emily and granddaughter Audrey. All offered constant loving support and care as we negotiated through this time of heartache. We will always remember and be grateful. The first comment about Billy was he made people laugh. He made people feel at home. Bill was a person of integrity, with an intense and intelligent interest in life and the world. As a litigation lawyer he loved the law, it's history, philosophy and any trip to London had to include a walk through the Inns of Court. His other passions in life were baseball, jazz, great cities with their history, art galleries and architecture. A walk through his books reflects all this plus his interest in ideas, politics, philosophy, and the state of the world, from physics to lost civilizations. There will not be a funeral, but when we return to a time when we can gather we will have a 'wake' to tell stories and remember. We want to acknowledge the tributes that have flooded in as they amount to many eulogies. In the meantime, play your favourite piece of music, remember the great trips you had, the moments that brought you joy, and when the first harvest moon comes, sing a chorus of "Shine on Harvest Moon" - he loved this song - as a celebration of his life.

I wish I had met William `Billy´. Having met some of his lovely family, and reading your warm tribute, Charlotte, I know I missed crossing paths with someone very special. Your memories must be wonderful.

Thinking of all of you. I am so sad that “Mr. Maxwell” is gone. When we were growing up, he was a great neighbourhood dad.

Dear Charlotte,
I hope you remember me -- I was Sharon Wood, a friend of Liz's -- but have returned to my maiden name of Broughton.
On behalf of my mother, Ruth Broughton, we are sending our family's heartfelt condolences to you and your family.
[My mother's family history research found the link to Bill - he was her second cousin, sharing a common ancestor at the great-grandparent generation. And we discovered this as we got to know Ruth Carruthers, and connected the dots with Liz, yourself and shook our heads at how small the world is.]
We can't imagine your loss and our hearts go out to you as you celebrate his life and legacy. I will play Shine on Harvest Moon for my parents in his honour.
Sending our best wishes of care and support,
Sharon Broughton and Ruth Broughton

I got to know Bill through the same baseball course - Baseball Spring
Training for Fans - that Rosemary Marie Branson mentioned.
He was a gentle soul who could make you laugh out loud with his
truly subtle sense of humour. You'd laugh out loud and then,
30 seconds later, realize that the remark - while still funny - was
usually underscored with an undeniable truth.
Bill also had that priceless and unique ability to talk with anyone
and make them feel he was genuinely interested in what they had to
say.

Bill was a delight. Charlotte’s tributes are spot on. Our closeness waned over the years but he was often in my musings and recollections. I have often told others of Bill’s statement on one occasion : “ I have decided on a title for the book I have been planning :: “ Maxwell On Procrastination “ “

Charlotte and the Maxwell family,
So sorry to hear about the passing of Bill. He was such a good friend to all of us at Seneca’s Spring Training For Baseball group. There were wonderful, fun stories over the years from Bill. He will be greatly missed.

Billy was a great friend through law school and thereafter. Full of fun and laughter. We shared our love if baseball and the law. Regrettably, we lost touch. Heaven will be the gainer in this exchange!
