McCALLION, William James (1918-1998)
At McMaster University Medical Centre on Saturday, April 18, 1998, William James McCallion, M.A., Dr. Sc. (Hon.), Professor Emeritus (Mathematical Sciences), former Director of Educational Services, and a former Dean of the School of Adult Education, McMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario, chief developer of the William J. McCallion Planetarium the first planetarium in Ontario in 1949 that offered showings to the public. Bill was the dearly beloved husband for 53 years of Jean McCallion (née Bacon), a devoted and loved father of Ken (Christine Gooderham), Nancy, Doug and Cheryl Johnston (Kenny Johnston); loved grandfather of Elizabeth and Alison Gooderham-McCallion, Lee and Kevin McCallion, Cody, Rebecca and Rachael Johnston, step-granddaughters Nicole and Melissa Johnston. Predeceased by his elder brother David John McCallion, and his wife Norah Jean McCallion, also his younger brother Samuel Robert McCallion. Bill will be greatly missed by his sister Mary Elizabeth Hems, her husband Herb, his sister-in-law Hazel McCallion, Mayor of Mississauga, sister-in-law Shirley Russell (Ward Russell), and their families. His family and his many friends remember with pride Bill's outstanding courage for more than 29 years in bravely meeting the challenge of the devastating effects of Parkinson's Disease. For 41 years he was a dedicated teacher and administrator at McMaster, also a loyal church member who served his church and community well. Funeral services entrusted to J.B. Marlatt Funeral Homes, Dundas (905-627-7452). Cremation has taken place. A memorial service of thanksgiving for Bill's life will take place at 11 a.m. on Friday, April 24, 1998, Westdale United Church, 99 North Oval, Westdale Village of Hamilton, Ontario, celebrants being the Reverend Hans Van Nie and The Very Reverend Doctor Bruce McLeod. Friends and relatives are invited to a reception after which Interment will take place publicly at White Chapel Memorial Gardens, 1895 Main Street West, Hamilton, Ontario.
