POY , William George, M.M.
Aged 94. Born May 17, 1907 to the late Louise and Willie Poy in Chiltern, New South Wales, Australia. Died peacefully, surrounded by family and close friends, in Toronto after a life of extraordinary adventure, luck and fun. Beloved husband of Ethel May Lam who predeceased him in 1988. Loving father of Adrienne Clarkson (John Ralston Saul) and Neville Poy (Vivienne Lee). Devoted grandfather of Ashley, Justin, Carter, Kyra, Blaise and the late Chloe. Great-grandfather of Daphne, April, Arthur and Talia. He leaves many close and loving relatives in Australia especially his brothers Lindsay and Roy of Albury and his niece Carmen Hood of Sydney. Mourned by his caring friends Xiao Rong Zong, Cathy Graham and Sandra Eu. As a young man, he worked with the Canadian Trade Commission in Hong Kong and was a champion amateur jockey. He served in the Hong Kong Volunteer Militia as a dispatch rider during the battle to defend that city, and was awarded the Military Medal. In 1942, he brought his family to Canada where they found refuge. He re-built his career first in the civil service and then in business with the support of his Canadian friends, particularly in the Department of Trade and Commerce. The family is deeply grateful to Belmont House, especially Julie Freer, Gwen Chiu and the nursing staff for their kindness and compassion. In lieu of flowers, donations in his name to the Kidney Foundation of Canada (200-1200 Eglinton Avenue East, Don Mills, Ontario.
