William RANKIN Obituary

WILLIAM C. RANKIN October 16, 1929 - March 6, 2021 Our family warmly remembers the long, full life of a husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, colleague and friend. Youngest child of Robert and Alice Rankin, predeceased by siblings Roberta (Albert Lang), Jane (Basil Mulligan), Alexander (Norah Costello), Peter and Winnifred (Bill Cartier) and by cherished daughter Heather (Christopher Decker). Survived by his beloved wife of 67 years, Nancy (Owens), and loving children Mary Alison, Andrew and Rob (Martha Kerr). He will be greatly missed by granddaughters Arlene (Kam Gill), MaryClaire (Drew Lunham) and Hilary (Sam Ward) Decker and Georgia Rankin. His time with great-grandchildren Isabelle (MaryClaire) and Ashreet (Arlene) was all too short. Bill will also be missed by a plethora of nieces, nephews and extended family. A native of Toronto, Bill attended University of Toronto Schools and the University of Toronto (B.Comm.) before working as a CA at Clarkson Gordon and then as a financial executive at Colonial Homes, The Globe and Mail, Toronto Star and T. Eaton Co. Bill finished his career as Sr. VP of Finance at Nova Corp. in Calgary. Bill and Nancy enjoyed retirement in Tucson, Florida and Guelph. His favorite place was the family cottage on Georgian Bay, the heart of the family's memories together. Bill Rankin was a remarkable man. He was successful, smart and highly competitive, a witty asset at social events and a formidable opponent in almost any game. An avid golfer, Bill hit his first hole-in-one at age 81 and continued playing 3 days/week right through last summer. Bill placed family above all and, with Nancy, formed the devoted and dependable anchor of his large clan. He was an unfailing source of love, strength and thoughtful support; his generosity and integrity were felt by all. Bill's unwavering faith in God's love empowered him to become the person we all admired and will all miss.

Dear Nancy and family. I’m so sorry to just learn of Bills passing today as your note in March got lost in my system. He was not just a wonderful mentor and boss in those great Nova days but such a special friend. I always hoped we could get together more often but when we did it was very special. Our prayers are with you all. Love always. Ron&Dorothy

I spent my childhood and teen summers largely between the Rankins and our cottage with Mary Alison, and I remember Bill as a loving father to his four children and devoted husband to Nancy. I learned how to fillet a fish from him, and tried my hand skiing behind their boat. Many fond memories of Bill.

I remember Bill as a loving father to his four children, along with their mother Nancy. I spent my childhood and teens with Mary Alison at our cottage next to Dunewood. Happiest years of my life, often at the Rankin's. I remember Mr. Rankin fondly.

Dear Nancy and family,

It’s been many years since I’ve seen you and Bill but I will say that his warm smile is one I will always remember. I know my father was a big fan of Bill’s and of course mom too. I had a nice correspondence with Rob after Heather passed and know what a comfort your large loving family is to you. Sending you my deepest condolences but also a standing ovation for a life so well lived and full of love. Hugs Ann Howard Holtby ❤
