For the past 45 plus years, a group of us Torontonians have been meeting regularly. At first, during our working years, we met in downtown pubs every Friday evening after work to socialize, chat about the work-week, and form friendships that have lasted. At the time, we called ourselves the Friday Night Club (FNC). As the years passed and we retired, one-by-happy-one, and we moved out of Toronto, we no longer called ourselves the FNC. Because we no longer met on Friday evenings, and we were aging, and at our get gatherings we frequently offered each other health advice, we started calling ourselves "The Doctors."
From the early years, Bill (Dr. Redelmeier), our youngest member, was part of both the FNC and later, "The Doctors." On Friday evenings, as member of the FNC, Bill brought his sketch book and HB pencil , and frequently, presented us with sketches of ourselves. If a piano was present at the establishment, Bill frequently sat down and generously, entertained us with a few tunes. Bill had also told me that he sometimes played the piano for the residents of a downtown homeless shelter.
As "The Doctors" a core group of us, including Bill, continued to meet regularly, though not as frequently, at members´ homes, pubs, and restaurants. Bill continued to entertain us with his talents by inviting us to his amateur opera performances which we enthusiastically attended.
Also, Bill created various computer programs for us "doctors" to review and provide feedback. I must say that my knowledge of computer programming did not reach his level of expertise, and I was often left very impressed. Ever generous, Bill invited some of us to accompany him to performances the Canadian Opera Company, the symphony, and other concerts.
Bill had a wry sense of humour, and you never knew when he would make a joke and crack us up. Bill will be very missed by "The Doctors."

I, Paul Murphy, met Bill through Joy Holland in the late 70's. We used to meet most Fridays after work and we started at the El Mocambo. From there we met at other restaurants throughout the city. and we even met at their cottage on Lake Simcoe. Since we are all now retired, we meet only about 3 times a year.
I had a year off from teaching and took my sailboat from Toronto to the Bahamas. Bill flew down for a week's visit and we did some fishing and visited Rose Island.
I was impressed that Bill entertained senior citizens by playing the piano for them at retirement homes.
You were a good man, Bill! You will be missed.
