William SCOTT Obituary

WILLIAM JOHN SCOTT In his 96th year, after a long illness, William (Bill) John Scott passed away on June 24, 2023 in Mississauga. He was born in Edinburgh Scotland to David Lambert Scott and Hannah Scott (Graham). His childhood growing up in the Depression was filled with many adventures where he learned to fend for himself while journeying through the countryside on his bicycle. Sometimes, he slept overnight in the open after procuring sustenance from local farmer's fields. This sense of adventure served him well throughout his life. Bill left the Leith Academy in Edinburgh to join the Royal Navy shortly before the end of World War II. The navy provided much wider scope in his quest for adventure. Bill saw much of the world, and while stationed in Portsmouth he accompanied one of his best mates, Jack, to attend his wedding on the Isle of Wight. There he met Jack's sister, Enid Smith, and they married a few months later. Three children followed thereafter: Gavin (Teresa), Wendy (Tom), and Nigel (Jill). Seeking to further his young family's fortunes, Bill left the navy and after working for a few years in England decided Canada offered more opportunities. A natural in sales and marketing, Bill worked for several companies including Procter & Gamble, Johnson & Johnson, and T.J. Lipton. But he found his real calling at Hallmark Cards where he progressed to senior positions including Vice President and President of Bowring. His Hallmark colleagues in Canada and the United States meant the world to him. He mentored many people to achieve success of their own and they were very appreciative of his help, Rene Ste. Marie being a prime example. When his wife Enid became very ill, Bill retired to look after her. After Enid passed, he spent a few years on his own before meeting Josephine Abraham, herself a widow. Bill and Jo enjoyed each other's company so much that they married in 2001. Bill leaves Jo, his three children, and six grandchildren: Aynsley (Justin), David (Melissa), Devon (Ian), Conor (Britt), Ted (Stacie), and Whitney (Jonathan). Bill also leaves thirteen (soon to be fourteen!) great-grandchildren. The last year of Bill's life proved trying as he struggled with his illness. His family would like to recognize and thank the wonderful staff at Mississauga Hospital, the Reactivation Care Centre, and The Wenleigh long term care home (especially Julia, Myrna, and Amrit) for their care, compassion, and kindness. Though the ending was difficult, Bill lived a full life and had much to be thankful for. He wished to have no formal ceremony. A private family Celebration of Life will be held at a future date.
