William SPENCE Obituary

WILLIAM "BILL" JOSEPH EDMUND SPENCE, M.D., F.R.C.S. (C) Bill Spence passed away peacefully at his home on February 22, 2021, surrounded by family members. Bill is survived by his wife of 65 years, Margaret (Peg) Spence of Toronto. He also leaves seven children: Paul Spence (Cathy) of Louisville, Kentucky; Frank Spence (Nanette Alvarez) of Calgary, Alberta; Sandra Spence of San Francisco, California; Bill Spence (Sheila) of Petersfield, England; Julie Spence (Jeff Engel) of Toronto; John Spence (Susan) of Toronto; and Jane Spence of Kitchener. He leaves fourteen grandchildren: William, JP, Lisi; Sean, Christopher, Emma; Clare (Sabry); James, Liam (Engel); Quinn, Hamish, Ewan; Charlotte, Lila (Reid); and one great-grandchild, Penelope. He was predeceased by his parents, William Spence and Rose (Jordan) Spence, and by his brother, Most Rev. Francis Spence, Seventh Archbishop of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Kingston. Born in Smiths Falls, Ontario, on November 2, 1924, Bill grew up on a Drummond Township farm with his family near Perth Ontario. As a youth, he enjoyed hockey and excelled at softball, pitching for the county league Tayside team. After graduating from Perth Collegiate high school, he responded to a provincial shortage of teachers by teaching for a year at the Union Hall one-room primary school and by doing so earned enough to attend university the following year. Bill attended Queen's University and graduated from its School of Medicine in 1949 as the gold medalist in Surgery. He was the first Queen's student accepted to University of Toronto's surgical training program. Following further training in Bristol, England, Bill joined the staff of the Department of Surgery at the Toronto General Hospital in 1957. He enjoyed a long career there and stepped away from performing surgeries in 1994 at the age of 70. Bill continued to see patients in his office practice until age 88, and attended bi-weekly surgical meetings and rounds, in person and more recently via videoconferencing, at the University Health Network until he was 96 years old. Bill gave every patient his very best. He carefully explained procedures to them, made post-operative visits seven days a week and took phone calls at all hours of the day. Deep appreciation for his skills and care was expressed by his patients. Known as "the surgeons' surgeon", his patients included other physicians, their family members, and friends. He was also recognized as a thoughtful and common-sense teacher, receiving many awards for his training of undergraduate and post-graduate trainees. Bill's dedication to his calling as a healer was exceeded only by his dedication and generosity as a father and grandfather. Home for dinner at the family table most evenings, he kept on top of his children's events and academic challenges. He reveled in backyard sports, playing ball hockey, basketball and baseball. He was ready to drive children to games in cold arenas and warmer ballparks at any hour, pausing only occasionally to indulge in his love of ice cream, professional baseball and big band music. As his children spread across the world, he travelled to them, and with them. He remained, to the very last day, up to date and connected with what every child and grandchild was doing, whether in person, by phone, or by FaceTime and Zoom. He will be remembered lovingly by them all. We extend our heartfelt thanks to the Temmy Latner Center, Unity Health Toronto, and the Toronto Central Local Health Integration Network whose excellent care enabled Bill to spend his final days at home with his family.

My family and I are truly sorrow for the loss of a wonderful doctor who will be cherished always. Dr. Spence was the best and we were saddened when he decided to retire but realized that he had to spend quality time with his wife and family. Dr. Spence was a doctor who had a wealth of knowledge that he shared with his patients and many others. He was a true gentleman and he will be sorely missed. Our condolences to his wife and family. May your hearts be filled with wonderful memories of joyful times together as you celebrate a life well lived.

I was a patient of Dr. Spence. Just before going in to surgery, he stood next to my gurney and told jokes to help calm me. He had a wonderful bedside manner and was always smiling and putting me at ease. I'm eternally grateful for his kindness and his caring soul. He was one of a kind!

March 5, 2021.
Dear Peggy and family,

I'm so sorry to hear of Bill's passing.
I was lucky enough to train under Dr. Spence as a surgical clinical clerk in 1983 and then work with him at UHN until his retirement in 2012. After his retirement from active surgery, he would often call to discuss the surg path reports on his office pts and catch up on what was happening at UHN. As Dr. Rotstein said so well, he was master surgeon as well as a true gentleman. The legacy and example he leaves has impacted thousands of patients and many generations of physicians and I feel blessed for having known him. He will be greatly missed.

Dr. Spence was a great friend to the Hawkins family especially when any of us required a visit to the Emergency Room at TGH or having a few stiches sewn in his family home to save us the trip. Al & Jane always spoke so highly of Dr. Spence as did everyone who had the pleasurer of his company.

Our deepest condolences to Peg and all of their children & grandchildren. He will be missed. A true gentleman.

Dr. Spence was the gold standard for a doctor. I first met him when I was 13 and he surgically fixed a minor issue. Thirteen years later, when I was 26 he removed my appendix. Twenty five years after that, he became my physician for a recurring issue and remained with him until his retirement. It seems odd to say, but I always looked forward to my yearly visits with him. His kindness and concern were legendary, and I'm sure he forgot more about medicine than most younger doctors know today. My deepest condolences to his family. He will be sorely missed.

My fondest memory of Dr. Spence was saving one of my chickens from choking when I was five years old! Of course, he and patched me up a few times over the 18 years we were neighbours, too! My condolences to all of you!

Dr Spence was one of my first clinical teachers in surgery as a student. I can still remember standing in a circle with my fellow clinic mates being grilled on masses in the neck. His system remains with me.
I had pleasant contacts with him along with Peg in more recent years. My sympathy to the family.

Dr. Spence looked after me when I was a 12 year old child. He was amazing and thoughtful to scared young gal (with the gallbladder of a 90 year old). I'm now 58 and will always remember his kindness.

Dear Peggy and family,
it was my privilege to train under Bill and then work alongside him for a number of years. He was a master surgeon and skilled diagnostician, devoted to his patients and students. He provided private patients and the indigent who came through the emergency department with the same level of outstanding care. In all the years I worked for or with him I never saw him lose his temper or composure, even in the most trying circumstances. Above all, Bill was a gentleman and a gentle man.
He will be missed.

My deepest condolences,
Lorne Rotstein
