WILLIAM SWIRSKY Obituary

Bill left this world peacefully, on May 27, 2024, from St. Michael's Hospital, at the age of 82. He had a deep and profound love for his wife and partner of 40 years, Carolyn Doyle. He was the best dad to daughters, Anita, Caroline and Roxane. The bond they all share is a testament of the power of love and family.

Bill is survived by his sisters, Terry (Jim) and Betty; and brother, Ken (Shirley). He will be deeply missed by his Doyle in-laws, and his many nieces and nephews on both sides of the family as well as dear friends. Bill was predeceased by his father, William James Swirsky Sr.; his mother, Frances Stella Swirsky (nee Wasney); and his daughters' mother, Lorraine Lussier-Swirsky.

Bill was an extraordinary individual and lover of life. As condolences were shared, heartfelt words that described him – kind, loving, generous, wise, and innovative – paint a vivid picture of his character. His sense of humour, mentoring spirit, and presence left lasting impressions on those fortunate enough to know him. A handsome man with a fabulous warm smile, he appreciated the little details bringing joy and richness into daily life. Bill loved to celebrate. He loved dining with dear friends and gatherings with his family. He was a passionate photographer, an avid reader, and loved learning about new technologies that would create more enjoyment in life. His soft spot for the natural world found expression in his photography.

Bill worked the majority of his career with CICA (now CPA Canada) as a Charted Accountant in Director and Vice President roles. His many contributions to the Accounting Profession were acknowledged by a Fellow designation. As a Professional Corporate Director, he championed good Governance, sitting on Boards in the Private and Public sectors as well as not for profit organizations. After retiring from CICA, Bill continued to be engaged in creative projects, serving as an advisor and mentor to a younger generation making their way in the business world. He had a wonderful instinct for connecting people for the benefit of the Accounting Profession as well as their own professional and personal development.

Through Bill's kindness, his love for life and his ability to bring out the best in people, Bill left an indelible mark on the hearts of many.

We look forward to a Celebration of Life at a later date.

I knew Bill when I was the Conference Administrator at the CICA and later as my boss when I worked for the Ontario Society for Training & Development. Bill was always very supportive of my career and my desire to pursue further education which led to a career in teaching and later law. Bill always had a warm, sincere and happy disposition. He was a tireless worker who contributed a lot to the CPA profession. My condolences to his wife and family.

Sincerely,
Rosemarie Millones

I was shocked to learn of Bill's passing and offer my heartfelt condolences to his family and his many, many friends who will miss him greatly. For 40 years Bill was a mentor and friend. I remember the first time I came to his office at the CICA with its glass Stetson, neon sign and stacks of books on the latest innovative ideas, and wondering who this unusual person was. Well, I found out. Throughout my career Bill offered me numerous opportunities to serve on CICA committees and task forces that aimed to help the profession progress and provided important learning and career opportunities for me. He was always drawing my attention to innovative ideas and challenging me to respond to them through my research and teaching. Inspired by his enthusiasm and vision, I attempted to do just that. He helped establish the University of Waterloo Centre for Information Integrity and Information System Assurance (UWCISA) in 1998 and served on its Board for 25 years, encouraging and advising me throughout the years on what to do and how to do it. I was thrilled to be awarded the Bill Swirsky Innovation Leadership Award in 2010, created by CICA and the CaseWare group of companies to recognize Bill's leadership in promoting innovation in the accounting profession. I treasure having my name linked to his in this way.

Bill was a wonderful colleague and friend. I loved his wicked twinkle and his appreciation of the absurd. He was a great co-conspirator! Also fundamentally a kind man.

I admired Bill very much. He was innovative, forward-looking, endlessly enthusiastic and collegiate. A true champion of both the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants and the accountancy profession. He will be greatly missed.
