Winifred FEWSTER Obituary
FEWSTER, Winifred Jean
May 24, 1924 - October 15, 2015
Jean passed away at home with loved ones at her side after a battle with cancer.
Born and raised in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Jean attended Nutana High School and then earned a degree in Home Economics at the University of Saskatchewan. From there she moved to Montreal where she completed a post-grad dietetic internship at the Royal Victoria Hospital.
Following her internship, some positions she held included assistant provincial nutritionist with the Ontario Red Cross Society and, home economics director of the Dairy Food Service Bureau serving consumers on behalf of the Dairy Farmers of Canada.
A summer course taken at the University of West Virginia led to a major career change for Jean. She headed back to school to the University of Wisconsin for a Master's in an interdisciplinary program in home economics journalism, which in turn lead to an interdisciplinary doctoral program in Mass Communications. This resulted in a job offer from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations at their headquarters in Rome, Italy for a 3 month consultancy. This turned into a 15 year career, visiting close to 100 countries and working with colleagues from Africa, Asia, Central/South America, the Middle East, Europe, Canada and the U.S.
From there she retired in 1986 and took up permanent residency in downtown Toronto. Over the years, Jean received several awards in the Home Economics field.
She is survived by her sister, Carol (Joe von Elbe); nieces, Mardi (Bruce Yancey), Lori Fraser, Stefanie von Elbe; nephew, Greg von Elbe; greatnieces and nephews, Chris Yancey, Cara Yancey, Paige Frigault and Hunter Frigault. She enjoyed 91 fabulous and fantastic years and will surely be missed by all her friends and family. There will be no services held at Jean's request.
