Winnifred HERINGTON Obituary
WINNIFRED ANNE HERINGTON 1924-2022 Passed away peacefully at Briton House, Toronto on November 17, 2022. She will be greatly missed by her niece, Janet Herington (John Morrison); nephews, Blake Herington and Jamie Herington (Jane Savage); great-nieces, Torie Goodman (Jake), Sarah Rubuliak (Nate), Katherine Herington, and Robbie Herington; as well as great-great-niece, Lenny Win Rubuliak. Predeceased by her parents, Harold Percy Herington (d 1976) and Winnifred Herington (nee Knowles) (d 1972); brother, Richard Edward Herington (d 1999); and sister-in-law, Marion Herington (nee Blanchard) (d 2005). Her professional career included work at Toronto General Hospital's Social Work Department and later heading up the Social Work Department and Treatment Programs for the Canadian Arthritis Society. After completing her Master's degree in Social Work, she returned to her alma mater, the University of Toronto, where her 24-year career included holding positions of Professor Emeritus, Graduate Secretary, and Associate Dean for the Faculty of Social Work, before retiring in 1989. Win had a lifelong passion for the not-for-profit sector where she spent much of her time and attention. Highlights of her work include many years with the Big Sisters of Metropolitan Toronto (now Youthlink) culminating in being elected President; 14 years as a director of Bloorview Children's Hospital and Foundation (now Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital); Chair of the Certification Committee for the Ontario Association of Social Workers; and finally, 15 years as a director and subsequent honorary member of the Counselling Foundation of Canada (founded by the Lawson family). St. John's York Mills Anglican Church has been a second family to her since 1951. She was the first woman warden and served on Diocesan Committees (Policy and Investigation of Clergy Sexual Abuse and The Bishop's Advisory Committee for Selection of Candidates for Ordination). In 2012 Win was honoured by being awarded the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Medal for her volunteer work. A resolutely quiet and determined woman driven by compassion, Win regularly pushed through barriers without fanfare. She loved to travel with her many close friends, her cousin Nancy Simpson, and her sister-in-law, Marion Herington. To our Win, with great respect and love, rest in peace. It was Win Herington's wish that any memorial tributes be made in the form of a charitable donation to one of these charities: St. John's York Mills Anglican Church Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital Youthlink Celebration of Life arrangements will be forthcoming in spring 2023 at St. John's York Mills Anglican Church.
