Wolfgang RIEDEL Obituary

Wolfgang Paul Riedel August 19, 1932 - February 24, 2017

Wolfgang Paul Riedel was born in his grandparents' home in Leipzig, Germany - the first of three siblings. Spending his childhood in pre-World War II Germany and his early adult years in post war Germany in Wiesbaden. At the age of 22, he immigrated to Canada arriving at Pier 21 in May 1955.

Wolf passed away peacefully at the Trillium Hospice in Parksville, BC holding the hand of his loving wife, Ursula Riedel, of 53 years. Through and through, Wolf was a family man who dearly loved his wife, his two daughters Marian and Karen, along with his sons-in-law Ian and Chris and his grandchildren Amalia, Hannah, Ryan and Kyle. Wolf is predeceased by his sister Rosemarie, brother-in-law Peter Blackwood and survived by his brother Eberhard and wife Elfriede of Hochstädten, Germany and his nephews Clayton, Andrew and partner Ania, and his great-niece Clara.

Wolf built a professional life for himself in Toronto as a Dental Technician starting 'on the bench' at Shaw Laboratories and rising to joint owner in the 1970s. Throughout his work, Wolf was passionate about the governance and education of dental technicians, participating actively in providing advice to and lecturing at George Brown College. In 1981, Wolf was appointed by the Ontario government to serve on the Governing Board of Dental Technicians, which he did until 1986, serving as Chairman from 1984 - 1986 where he was instrumental in transforming the Governing Board of Dental Technicians to the College of Dental Technologies of Ontario. In 1986 he became an inaugural inductee into the Dental Technicians Hall of Fame. Upon retiring from the 'lab' in 1987, he developed a successful career as a dental consultant through his company, Riedent Services Ltd., where he was in demand from dental laboratories across Canada and around the globe for his professionalism, knowledge, expertise and business acumen.

Wolf had a love affair with history books and was well known for his love of nature and passion for hunting which he enjoyed immensely while at the cottage. Wolf was also known for his love of good food, wine and schnapps and was an active member of the Chaîne des Rôtisseurs. Upon retiring to Nanoose Bay, BC in 1996, Wolf, along with Ursula, grew to love their house by the sea watching the wildlife, travelling and spending time with friends old and new. However, he was most passionate about his model railway, spending his retirement years building, then 'playing' with his purpose-built layout and exchanging hobby ideas with the Mid-Island Railroad Club. Wolf spent his final years passionately writing his life story A Window into the Past.

The family would like to thank Dr. Maccari and staff for their continuous support, and the Hospice staff for making his final days and journey so comfortable.

There will be a funeral service for Wolf on Friday March 3, 2017 at Yates Memorial Services in Parksville, BC from 12:00 - 2:00 pm. Flowers can be sent or a donation to the Vancouver Island Symphony is appreciated in lieu of flowers.
