Z.A. PATRICK Obituary

DR. Z.A. (PAT) PATRICK, B.Sc. (McGill), PhD. (U. of T.) Professor Emeritus Of Botany, University of Toronto Peacefully, surrounded by family, on Saturday July 31, 2010 at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre from heart failure in his 87th year. Beloved and devoted husband of Emily 61 years. Dear, loving father of Janet, Caroline (Michael Simpson), and Ronald. Cherished and proud grandfather of Caryl, Jeffrey, Kevin, Emily and Jimmy. Special brother to Anelia (Nellie) Wright. Predeceased by brother Max. Lovingly remember by sisterin-law Mary Krul and husband Stanley. Pat was a professor of plant pathology dedicated and passionate towards the control of soil-borne root diseases of plants, and to education of his many students. He conducted several research projects at the Canadian Department of Agriculture Research Stations in Harrow and Vineland, Ontario, and at Berkeley, California. His work was widely published and cited. In 1993 he was awarded the Dr. & Mrs. D.L. Bailey Award for an exceptional and distinguished contribution to plant pathology. Pat will be dearly remembered and sadly missed by his much-loved family, friends, and colleagues. He showed strength and dignity until the end. Pat was a special man with many interests, but family matters and events came first. His advice was valued and selflessly given. His warm and caring nature was felt by all who knew him. A private family service was held followed by cremation. A special thanks to the entire medical team at Sunnybrook. In Lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario or a charity of your choice.
